Mantra 1

Mantra 2
Mantra 3

Mantra 4

Mantra 5

Mantra 6

Mantra 7

Begins by placing the war-band under Manyu’s chariot-driving impetus—fighters exulting, Marut-like, weapon-ready, advancing ‘in Agni’s form’ (4.31.1).
That Manyu, praised as the One among many, set each clan in order for battle and empower a radiant victory-cry (4.31.4), while enemies are inwardly frightened and externally routed.
The hymn repeatedly frames Manyu as a yoked ally whose presence converts preparation into irresistible momentum—weapon-whetting, formation, and ghoṣa become effective instruments of conquest.
Concludes with a dual bestowal: Varuṇa and Manyu grant fully-compacted wealth, while foes—fear-bearing and defeated—withdraw and hide themselves (4.31.7).
agni-rūpāḥ
dyumantaṃ ghoṣaṃ
bhiyo dadhānā hṛdayeṣu
Abhicarika / Rājanya (martial incitement; battle-charm)
Mobilize and intensify martial force, organize the fighting clans, drive enemies into panic and flight, and secure victory with consolidated wealth/spoil.
Kṣatriya/Rājanya leadership, commanders, and war-bands; also a purohita/atharvan priest supporting military campaigns.
Manyu is personified Wrath/Fury—an energized, disciplined battle-impulse that can be yoked to righteous aggression, martial order, and conquest; he is described in imagery aligned with Marut-speed and Agni-form (fiery, forward-driving).
To yoke Manyu as the commander-force of the host—animating fighters, coordinating formations, generating a triumphant battle-cry, and breaking the enemy through fear—culminating in victory and secured wealth.
Immediately before marching out, at the moment of mustering/forming ranks, or at first sighting of the opposing host.
Weapons and the battle-cry (ghoṣa) as the principal ‘implements’ of the rite; fire as the emblem of Agni-form.
No herbal compounding is specified; prepare by mustering troops, inspecting/whetting weapons, establishing a fire-focus, and rehearsing the ghoṣa to be raised at the designated verse.
In AV 4.31, Manyu is treated as a personified power: battle-fury that can be praised, yoked as an ally, and directed to organize troops and break the enemy’s will.
“Agni-form” (agni-rūpāḥ) is a transformation-image: the fighters advance as if fire itself—bright, consuming, unstoppable—so their momentum and terror-effect intensify.
Its primary aim is martial victory and enemy-routing (Abhicārika/Rājanya), but the close also asks Varuṇa and Manyu for ‘well-compacted’ wealth—spoils and secure gains (a Paustika outcome).
