Sukta 91

Rishi: Indra-hymn tradition (RV-derived in AV 20; seer as in the RV source of the verse)

Devata: Indra; with Dyāvāpr̥thivī as ancillary deities

Chandas: Triṣṭubh (RV-style; common in AV 20 RV-recitations)

Inside Sukta 91

How it unfolds

  1. How it opens

The hymn opens by situating Indra as the mighty agent whose greatness breaks cosmic constraints, setting a protective frame through mythic precedent.

  2. What it asks

Let blessings become true and effective; let all assaults fall behind; let Indra break the blocker and restore flow/wealth to the patron.

  3. Where its power lies

Indra’s past deeds—splitting Vala, smiting the Serpent, freeing the Seven Rivers, crushing Arbuda—are cited as proof that the same power now operates through the recited hymn.

  4. How it closes

A final protective carry-forward: with the gods, and with Heaven and Earth as supports, ‘bear us onward’ in protection (prāvatam naḥ).

Famous verses

Verse 20.91.12Culminating victory-and-protection verse: Indra splits the flood/Arbuda, smites the Serpent, releases the Seven Rivers, and then explicitly asks Dyāvā-Pṛthivī to protect and carry the patron onward—making the myth directly apotropaic.Read verse 20.91.12 →
paścā́ mṛ́dho ápa bhavantu víśvāḥ
Verse 20.91.11Programmatic protective petition: it asks that the blessing be made true and that all assaults be turned behind the patron; it also states the meta-idea that the deity empowers the hymn itself (kīri) as an instrument of efficacy.Read verse 20.91.11 →

Kind of hymn

Apotropaic / Protective (Indra-Vṛtra complex; secondarily Paustika by release-of-waters imagery)

What it is for

To remove obstruction, repel assaults, make blessings and praise efficacious, and ‘release’ prosperity—symbolized as rivers/waters and recovered cattle—so the patron proceeds safely and successfully.

Who it is for

Householders and patrons seeking protection from hostility/obstruction; ritual specialists reciting RV-derived Atharvanic collections for safeguarding journeys, households, herds, and communal welfare.

Also used as

  • Paustika (prosperity; release-of-waters/wealth imagery)
  • Shantika (pacificatory stabilization via Dyāvā-Pṛthivī as witnesses/supports)

The deity

Indra is the paradigmatic breaker of obstructions—slayer of the Serpent, splitter of enclosures, releaser of waters and wealth; Dyāvā-Pṛthivī function as cosmic supports and witnesses who ‘carry’ the protected person onward.

Powers of the deity

  • Splits and destroys obstructions (Vṛtra/Vala/Arbuda motifs)
  • Releases waters/streams and restores flow (sapta sindhūn)
  • Recovers wealth/cattle and defeats hoarders (Paṇi principle)
  • Turns back attacks and hostilities (mṛdhaḥ)
  • Empowers the hymn/blessing to become effective (āśiṣ, kīri)
  • Provides onward safe passage and protection with cosmic order (Dyāvā-Pṛthivī as stabilizers)

Why the deity is called

Invoked to smash whatever ‘blocks’ the patron—disease-like constraint, social hostility, theft/withholding—and to convert Indra’s mythic victories into immediate protection, restored resources, and renewed life-flow.

The seer

  • RV-derived Indra-hymn seer (as in the Rigvedic source of the verses; mixed attributions within the sukta, incl. Bṛhaspati for v.11)Angiras. Protective and prosperity-producing recitations that ‘open’ what is blocked—Vṛtra/Vala-breaking, turning back hostility (mṛdhaḥ), and making blessings effective through empowered speech (kīri)

Other hymns of this seer

  • AV 20.90
  • AV 20.92
  • AV 20.93
  • RV Indra-cycle hymns (source stratum for AV 20 recitations)

Preparing for the rite

  • Establish a clean recitation space; orient to the quarters and mentally ‘set’ Indra as obstacle-breaker.
  • Prepare a vessel of clean water for sprinkling (symbolizing the released rivers).
  • If the rite is for protection during travel or conflict, mark a boundary line/threshold to be ‘guarded’ by the recitation.

The rite

  • Recite the sukta in Triṣṭubh cadence with emphasis on the Vṛtra/Vala-breaking verbs (e.g., ‘vi…abhinat’, ‘ahan’, ‘ariṇāt’).
  • After key victory-verses, sprinkle water forward and around the patron to enact the ‘released flow’ and turning back of assaults.
  • Conclude by invoking Dyāvā-Pṛthivī as witnesses/supports, verbally sealing protection and safe passage.

What it needs

  • Clean water (for sprinkling; ‘seven rivers’ symbolism)
  • Optional protective cord/amulet to be tied after recitation
  • Optional offering/oblation (ghee) if performed in a fire-context, aligning Indra’s strengthening

When

At dawn or before undertaking a risky action (journey, dispute, recovery of goods); also suitable after signs of blockage/hostility to ‘open’ conditions.

The main substance

Water (symbolic enactment of the ‘released rivers’ and restored flow)

Amulets

  • Protective cord (rakṣā-sūtra) tied after recitation
  • Knot/strap or small token kept on the person as a ‘seal’ of Indra’s protection

How it is prepared

Keep clean water in a dedicated vessel; after recitation of key victory-verses, sprinkle in front/around the patron and at thresholds or boundaries to externalize ‘release’ and repel hostility.

Frequently Asked Questions

For protection and obstacle-removal—turning back hostility, breaking ‘blockages’ (social, physical, or ritual), and restoring prosperity and smooth progress.

These are symbolic victory-images: rivers represent released life-flow and prosperity; cows represent recoverable wealth; Vṛtra/Vala/Paṇi represent forces that withhold, obstruct, or attack.

Not strictly, but clean water is the most fitting accompaniment (sprinkling as ‘released rivers’). A simple protective cord/amulet may be tied afterward to mark the protection as ongoing.
