Indra-Agni (dual)

Chandas

Inside Sukta 93

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

A ‘newborn today’ pure hymn is offered, inviting Indrāgnī—easy to call and Vṛtra-slayers—to accept and to bestow immediate vāja (force/plenty).

  2. Development

The hymn situates their help amid rivalry and conflict: the two luminous powers advance as winners of heroic prize, supporting the god-seeking community within the sacrificial assembly.

  3. Climax

A decisive plea: in the ritual gathering, together with the devayus (god-seekers), strike down the adevayu (anti-divine) force completely—supported by Soma pressed by the people.

  4. Where it settles

The hymn ends with swift offerings and a sustained request for welfare and protection, ensuring the sacrificer is not passed over by Indra, Viṣṇu, or the Maruts, and is guarded in lasting well-being.

The deity: Indrāgnī

  • In the VedaIndra and Agni are praised together as readily invoked, radiant, and victorious: Agni as the blazing sacrificial mouth and messenger, Indra as the conquering lord of force; as a pair they are invoked to accept the newborn hymn, drive back obstruction, and empower the sacrificer in the assembly.
  • Cosmic functionThey unite heaven’s conquering might (Indra) with earth’s/altar’s transforming fire (Agni), ensuring the sacrifice reaches the gods, obstacles are shattered, and life-force, rain/strength, and victory circulate in the world-order (ṛta).
  • Inner significanceThe pairing symbolizes will and illumination acting as one: decisive power (Indra) guided by conscious flame (Agni). Psychologically, it is the integration of courage with clarity—energy that is rightly directed, overcoming inner inertia and hostile impulses.

The seer

  • VasiṣṭhaVasiṣṭha gotra (Āditya-related seer-line; traditional Vasiṣṭha family of Maṇḍala 7) · Foremost among the Saptaṛṣi, famed as the principal seer of Rigveda Maṇḍala 7 and as the archetypal royal priest (purohita) who harmonizes sacred speech with effective ritual power for protection and victory.

Frequently Asked Questions

Indrāgnī means Indra and Agni invoked as a pair. Indra represents conquering strength, while Agni is the sacrificial fire that carries offerings; together they unite ritual power with victory over obstacles.

It asks Indra–Agni to accept the fresh hymn and to grant vāja—strength, success, and winning power—quickly, while also destroying hostile or ‘godless’ opposition and protecting the worshippers.

The closing verse broadens the protection: the poet prays that Indra, Viṣṇu, and the Maruts do not overlook the sacrificer. It is a way of securing welfare (svasti) from the wider circle of allied divine powers.
