Inside Sukta 180

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

Indra is hailed as the much-invoked victor whose supreme force overcomes adversaries and whose gift should be present here.

  2. Development

The hymn intensifies with vivid imagery: Indra arrives from far distances like a terrifying beast of the heights; his weapons are sharpened for decisive action.

  3. Climax

A direct command-prayer: strike apart the enemies and drive away the assaults—Indra’s violence is framed as protective and order-restoring.

  4. Where it settles

Indra’s birth into sovereign power is affirmed; he expels hostile tendencies and establishes a wide realm for the gods—security, space, and auspicious functioning.

The deity: Indra

  • In the VedaIndra is the “much-invoked” (puruhūta) warrior-lord, mighty in śuṣma (impetuous power), who strikes enemies apart and grants riches and protection. He is praised as vṛṣabha (bull) of the peoples and as a ruler who commands the “streams of plenty.”
  • Cosmic functionChampion of ṛta in the martial sense: he breaks obstructions, defeats hostile powers, and releases life-supporting abundance (often imaged as waters/streams and wealth).
  • Inner significanceThe awakened force of will and courage that cuts through inner resistance, disperses destructive impulses, and creates a wide inner space for clarity, devotion, and higher faculties to operate.

The seer

  • An unknown (Anukta) seerThis hymn is transmitted without a named rishi; such anukta hymns in Book 10 often preserve older formulae focused on Indra’s victory, protection, and bestowal of riches.
