Sukta 18
स॒दा॒न्वा॒क्षय॑णमसि सदान्वा॒चात॑नं मे दाः॒ स्वाहा॑
sadā́nvā́kṣáyaṇam asi sadā́nvā́cā́tanaṃ me dā́ḥ svā́hā
Thou art ever-following, inexhaustible; ever-following, unassailable: grant thou that to me. Svāhā.
Rishi: Atharvanic tradition (specific r̥ṣi attribution for this single mantra is not uniform across ancillary lists; commonly treated as Atharvan/Angiras-type rakṣā material).
Devata: Rakṣā (protective power) embodied in the consecrated object/act; functionally a personified protective efficacy rather than a single named deva.
Chandas: Anuṣṭubh-like cadence (short, formulaic charm-line; exact metrical scansion is secondary to performative diction here).
Primary: shanta
Secondary: vira
Sāyaṇa takes the addressed entity (typically the consecrated protective implement/amulet or the empowered oblation) as being characterized by two permanent properties: (1) akṣayaṇa—‘non-wasting’ protective force that does not diminish with use; (2) acātana—‘not liable to be smitten/overcome,’ hence a ward against hostile agencies. The repetition of sadā + anu marks uninterrupted continuity of protection. The imperative dāḥ is the ritual moment of ‘bestowal’ upon the yajamāna; svāhā functions as the performative closure that fixes the efficacy.
To secure continuous, inexhaustible protection and invulnerability for the beneficiary against harm, defeat, and hostile agencies.
General vulnerability, relapse-prone weakness, fear-based depletion; protective support in convalescence (Atharvan frame).
Stabilizing rakṣā: builds a continuous protective field; reduces stress and perceived threat, supporting recovery.
Ojas-protection (strength/resilience) and manas stabilization; supportive to rasāyana aims conceptually.
Resilience-building, relapse prevention, anxiety buffering; supportive practice during recovery or chronic stress.
shantika
To secure continuous, inexhaustible, unassailable protection that accompanies the beneficiary everywhere.
Consecration of a protective support (amulet/offering) as ‘ever-following’ + sealing via svāhā; often paired with wearing/placing the object.
general harm, defeat, intrusion, lapses in protection
long life, stability, sustained success
Declares the charm/act as ‘ever-following’ and ‘inexhaustible’ (sadā-anu-akṣayaṇa), and as ‘ever-following, not-to-be-driven-away’ (sadā-anu-acātana), requesting that continuous protection be granted—svāhā.
A psychological talisman of continuity: protection that does not lapse when vigilance drops. It cultivates steady self-trust and an internal guardian presence that ‘follows’ through changing situations.
True safety is not momentary victory but sustained resilience. Repetition and continuity (sadā-anu) transform protection from an event into a stable condition.
Continuity of inner refuge; building a stable protective witness-awareness.
muladhara
Slow diaphragmatic breathing (6 breaths/min) while repeating ‘sadā’ mentally.
A soft golden thread of light follows behind you through the day, reconnecting at the heart and sealing the aura.
Grounded serenity.
Use as a morning ‘seal’ practice: 3–11 repetitions, then a minute of quiet sensing of steadiness; end with gratitude to reduce fear-driven clinging.
Gentle, even recitation; emphasize sadā and anu as continuity-markers; svāhā as soft seal.
Keep compounds clear: sadā-anu-; avoid rushing; let the cadence feel ‘unbroken.’
sadā: long ā, anu: short a-u, not ‘ānu’, akṣayaṇa: tight kṣ, clear ya, svāhā: long ā, relaxed ending
Warm, steady, soothing.
Best paired with a wearable support (thread/maṇi) to embody ‘anu’ (following) and ‘akṣaya’ (inexhaustible).
11
Starting a new job, travel, recovery after illness, feeling generally vulnerable or ‘unprotected.’
Morning sealing practice; before leaving home; after cleansing/bath; before sleep for steady protection.
Calm confidence, steadier boundaries, reduced anxiety, sense of continuous support.
Do not substitute for medical/security measures; avoid magical dependency—use as support, not avoidance.
