दि॒वि ते॒ तूल॑मोषधे पृथि॒व्याम॑सि॒ निष्ठि॑तः । त्वया॑ स॒हस्र॑काण्डे॒नायुः॒ प्र व॑र्धयामहे
diví te tū́lam oṣadhe pṛthivyā́m asi níṣṭhitaḥ | tváyā sahásra-kāṇḍenā́yuḥ prá vardhayāmahe
In heaven is thy tuft, O herb; on earth thou art set firm. With thee, O thousand-stemmed one, we increase life mightily.
Rishi: Atharvanic tradition.
Devata: Oṣadhi (Herb) identified with darbha; cosmicized as heaven-origin power.
Chandas: Anuṣṭubh-like cadence.
Primary: adbhuta
Secondary: shanta
Sayana reads the heaven/earth pairing as establishing the herb’s cosmic legitimacy: its ‘tuft’ is in heaven (divine origin), yet it is ‘set’ on earth for human use. ‘Sahasra-kāṇḍa’ reiterates abundant vitality; by employing it (tvayā) the priest ‘causes life to grow’ (āyuḥ pra vardhayāmahe), i.e., extends lifespan and wards premature death.
To increase lifespan by invoking darbha’s cosmic origin and abundant vitality.
Invokes cosmic origin and firm establishment to ‘feed’ āyus; the herb acts as a vitality-conduit when present/handled.
Supports prāṇa/ojas conceptually (ojas-like strengthening), though not a doṣa-targeted remedy.
Grounding practices that integrate meaning/purpose (heaven) with routines/body care (earth) to support longevity.
bhaisajya
wearer/household member
Increase lifespan and vital stability using darbha’s cosmic authority.
Cosmic legitimation (heaven/earth placement) + instrumental formula (‘tvayā…’) to channel power.
general life-drain, instability, misfortune
long life, vitality
The herb’s tuft is in heaven; on earth it is firmly set. With you, O thousand-stemmed one, we greatly increase life.
A person stabilizes by linking ‘higher’ inspiration (divi) with grounded embodiment (pṛthivī). The herb becomes a bridge: uplifted yet rooted.
Vitality grows when heaven and earth—meaning and matter—are integrated; the most effective protection is both transcendent in origin and practical in placement.
Heaven–earth alignment (vertical axis) to cultivate vitality.
muladhara (earth) + sahasrara (heaven)
Inhale imagining energy descending from crown; exhale rooting into pelvis/feet; then reverse for 7 cycles.
A green tuft at the crown connected by a luminous channel to roots in the earth; each breath ‘thickens’ āyus as golden sap.
Integrated, centered, quietly energized.
Recite once, then practice 7 slow breaths with the axis visualization; finish with a brief gratitude for embodied life.
Slight lift on ‘divi te tūlam’ then settle on ‘pṛthivyām asi niṣṭhitaḥ’; energize the final ‘āyuḥ pra vardhayāmahe’.
Mark the contrast divi/pṛthivyām with a clear pause; keep ‘sahasra-kāṇḍena’ flowing as one unit.
Pronounce ‘oṣadhe’ with clear ṣ, Keep ‘niṣṭhitaḥ’ with retroflex ṣṭh, Avoid over-lengthening short vowels in ‘divi’
Clear, steady, slightly uplifting at the end.
If used with an actual tuft, coordinate the first pāda with raising it, the second with touching/placing it firmly.
