Inside Sukta 64

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

The Ādityas are addressed as dwelling across the worlds, radiant and active, asked to accept the offering and establish sovereign order.

  2. Development

The prayer turns practical: Mitra–Varuṇa (as divine Arya powers) are asked to lead the worshipper forward by the most effective paths and to keep hostile forces at bay.

  3. Climax

A concentrated appeal for divine guidance and protection—speech and destiny aligned so that “no enemy may reach,” while nourishment and increase are enjoyed under divine guardianship.

  4. Where it settles

The hymn closes by presenting the stoma like a bright Soma and asking the gods to take up the striving thoughts and grant continual svasti—ongoing well-being and protection.

The deity: Mitra–Varuṇa with Aryaman

  • In the VedaMitra and Varuṇa are paired Ādityas: Mitra embodies concord, covenant, and right relationship, while Varuṇa is the kingly upholder of ṛta who “binds” by law and releases by grace; Aryaman appears as the noble power of hospitality, social belonging, and rightful companionship. Together they are invoked as well-born sovereigns who delight in the offering and establish ordered life.
  • Cosmic functionGuardians of ṛta who regulate moral and cosmic law, stabilize the worlds (heaven–midspace–earth), and guide beings along right paths while restraining disorder and hostility.
  • Inner significanceThe hymn frames an inner discipline: truthfulness and self-regulation (Varuṇa), harmonious cooperation and trust (Mitra), and dignified social integration and generosity (Aryaman). Their protection becomes the steadying of thought (dhī) and the securing of svasti—clarity, safety, and right orientation.

The seer

  • VasiṣṭhaVasiṣṭha-gotra (Maṇḍala 7 family book tradition) · Foremost seer-priest of the Rig Veda’s seventh maṇḍala, celebrated for hymns on ṛta, royal prosperity, and the divine guardianship of truth; later tradition also remembers him among the Saptarṣi.

Frequently Asked Questions

The hymn primarily praises Mitra and Varuṇa, paired Ādityas who uphold cosmic and moral order, and it also invokes Aryaman as a noble Āditya linked with rightful companionship and social harmony.

It asks them to accept the offering, guide the worshipper forward on the best paths, keep enemies and harm away, strengthen inspired thought, and grant continual svasti (well-being).
