Soma Pavamāna

Mantras

Mantra 1

Mantra 2

Mantra 3

Mantra 4

Mantra 5

Mantra 6

Inside Sukta 105

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

A call to the ritual companions to sing to Soma as he purifies for ecstasy and sacred sweetness.

  2. Development

Praise turns to Soma’s bestowal of luminous abundance (cows/horses) and the establishment of his pure radiance among the rays (goṣu).

  3. Climax

Soma is invoked as a force of victory and endurance who repels hostile, godless powers and inner division.

  4. Where it settles

The hymn closes with protection and integration: Soma is asked to press away the ‘dual-minded’ splitter so the sacrificer’s gain and clarity remain undisturbed.

The deity: Soma Pavamāna

  • In the VedaSoma is the pressed and filtered sacred drink, envisioned as a living, radiant current (Indu) that runs through the woolen sieve, becoming pure, sweet, and exhilarating, and fit for divine enjoyment.
  • Cosmic functionHe mediates between humans and gods through the sacrifice, invigorates Indra and the deities, renews vitality, and establishes luminous order by turning raw offering into clarified, potent essence.
  • Inner significanceThe purifying Soma symbolizes the refinement of consciousness: emotions and impulses are filtered into clarity, joy, and focused power; he also represents the force that integrates the personality by expelling doubt and divisive tendencies.

The seer

  • An unknown Soma-Pavamāna seer (anonymous)Representing the collective voice of the Soma-pressers and chanters in Mandala 9, where many hymns are preserved without a specific named rishi.

Frequently Asked Questions

It asks Soma to purify as a sweet, exhilarating drink, to grant luminous prosperity, and to protect the worshipper by driving away harmful and divisive forces.

In Vedic poetry they can mean both literal wealth and symbolic powers—cows as rays of light/knowledge and horses as energies or capacities that carry one forward.

It can mean an outer opponent who creates division, and also an inner state of doubt or split intention that weakens concentration; Soma is invoked to push that away.
