Sukta 15

Rishi: Atharvanic tradition (commercial/travel charms)

Devata: Indra

Chandas: Anuṣṭubh (probable)

Inside Sukta 15

How it unfolds

  1. How it opens

The hymn opens by mobilizing Indra together with the merchant—Indra is asked to go ahead as the expedition’s leader (puraetā).

  2. What it asks

Clear the road of mischance and path-haunting dangers; ensure that trading wealth does not diminish but increases, and that divine support remains attached to the venture.

  3. Where its power lies

Indra is proclaimed sovereign and wealth-bestower, able to thrust away obstacles; Agni as sātághna is invoked to secure the gods through oblation, making success ritually ‘settled.’

  4. How it closes

A concluding orientation to regular offering and sustained prosperity (rāyas-poṣa, iṣ), with a protective seal against harm arising from neighbors/rivals (prativeśa).

Kind of hymn

Paustika (Prosperity) with Adhvanika (journey/road-protection) features

What it is for

Safe departure and return of a trading journey, removal of road-obstacles and mischance, increase of trading-capital, and protection from rivals/neighborly harm.

Who it is for

Merchants, caravan leaders, travelers transporting goods, and householders sending agents to market or on business journeys.

Also used as

  • Adhvanika (journey/road-protection)
  • Vāṇijya (commerce/market success)
  • Śāntika (averting mishap and social harm)

The deity

Indra appears as the sovereign forerunner who leads the enterprise, drives off dangers on the road, and grants wealth; Agni functions as the oblation-bearer who ‘binds’ divine support to the merchant’s cause and stabilizes prosperity.

Powers of the deity

  • Leads and clears the path (puraetā; adhvan-protection)
  • Repels mishap, hostile beings, and ‘path-haunting’ dangers (paripanthin)
  • Bestows wealth, gain, and successful return (dhanadā)
  • Stabilizes divine favor through offering (Agni as havis-mediated support)
  • Protects social boundaries from envy, rivalry, and neighborhood harm (prativeśa-avoidance)

Why the deity is called

To appoint Indra as the expedition’s vanguard for safe passage and profit, while employing Agni and oblation to secure continuing divine alignment and prevent loss or social sabotage.

The seer

  • Atharvanic seer(s) of the vāṇijya/adhvan corpus (anonymous in many recensions)Atharvan. Paustika charms for commerce, profit, safe travel, and apotropaic protection against road-obstructions, rivals, and mischance

Other hymns of this seer

  • AV.3.14 (adjacent prosperity/enterprise material, recension-dependent)
  • AV.3.16 (adjacent road/enterprise protections, recension-dependent)
  • AV.6.91 (wealth-increase/prosperity theme, often cited in paustika contexts)

Preparing for the rite

  • Choose a clean departure-point (threshold, cart-yard, or road-junction) and mentally mark the ‘path’ (adhvan) as the ritual space.
  • Prepare a small havis offering (ghee, grains, or simple food-offering) for Agni if a fire is available; otherwise keep a symbolic offering ready.
  • Assemble travel-gear and goods; tie a simple protective knot/cord on baggage or staff as a mnemonic support for the mantra (optional, Atharvanic practice).
  • Face the direction of travel; establish intention: ‘gain without loss; safe road; successful return.’

The rite

  • Recite the opening verses to ‘set in motion’ Indra and the merchant (vaṇij) and to appoint Indra as forerunner (puraetā).
  • During recitation, gesture forward (or step forward) to enact departure; name the road-dangers to be driven away (mischance, paripanthin threats).
  • If fire/altar is present, offer havis with the Agni-verse(s), requesting that the gods be ‘fixed’ to the enterprise (ni ṣedha).
  • Conclude with daily-offering orientation: vow/resolve of continued propitiation for sustained increase (rāyas-poṣa) and protection from neighbors (prativeśa).

What it needs

  • Havis/oblation (ghee, grains, or food-offering)
  • Fire or lamp (if available)
  • Travel staff/cord/knot as optional apotropaic support
  • Goods/coinage (dhana) as the ritualized ‘capital’ being protected and increased

When

At the moment of departure for trade; optionally repeated at dawn daily during the journey and upon entering markets.

The main substance

Havis (simple oblation, typically ghee/grains)

Amulets

  • Protective cord/knot tied to baggage or staff (optional, Atharvanic apotropaic support)
  • Travel staff or baggage-mark as a ‘carried’ reminder of Indra’s forerunning protection

How it is prepared

Prepare a small, clean offering portion; if a fire is present, offer during Agni-verses. If not, keep the offering intentionally set aside and perform a mental offering (saṃkalpa) while reciting.

Frequently Asked Questions

It is used to begin or protect a trading journey—asking Indra to go ahead on the road, remove dangers, and ensure profit and safe return.

Indra functions as the powerful forerunner and wealth-giver for the journey, while Agni—through offering—‘anchors’ divine support to the enterprise so gains increase rather than diminish.

A small havis offering with Agni strengthens the rite, but the hymn can also be recited at departure with a symbolic or mental offering when a fire is not available.
