Devata

Indra

Chandas

Anuṣṭubh-like cadence possible; exact meter requires scan (shorter pādas suggest non-Trishtubh)

Mantra 7

Inside Sukta 30

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

The hymn opens by declaring Indra’s absolute supremacy—none is higher or greater than him, especially as Vṛtrahan.

  2. Development

It develops through recollection of Indra’s concrete heroic acts: rushing upon foes, breaking fronts and strongholds, and overturning the powers that conceal and obstruct (e.g., Śuṣṇa).

  3. Climax

The peak is the vivid portrayal of Indra’s irresistible assault and shattering of enemy defenses—mythic victory made present as ritual assurance.

  4. Where it settles

It resolves into a prosperity-oriented blessing, widening the field from Indra’s victory to repeated bestowal of "vāmam" (desirable good) by auspicious deities.

The deity: Indra

  • In the VedaIndra is hailed as the peerless lord of might and victory, the slayer of Vṛtra and breaker of forts, who rushes upon enemies and releases obstructed goods (waters, cattle, light, and power). He is approached with soma-inspired praise as the champion who cannot be surpassed.
  • Cosmic functionHe shatters obstruction and restores the right circulation of life—rain/waters, vitality, and worldly order—by defeating powers of drought, darkness, and confinement.
  • Inner significanceIndra symbolizes the awakened will and victorious clarity that breaks inner coverings (fear, inertia, delusion) and reopens the "blocked" channels of energy and insight.

The seer

  • Vāmadeva GautamaGautama gotra (Vāmadeva of the Gautamas) · A principal seer of Maṇḍala 4, celebrated for powerful Indra hymns that blend heroic myth, theological supremacy claims, and practical requests for protection and bounty.
