Rishi

Gṛtsamada (of the Bhṛgu-Aṅgiras line)

Devata

Bṛhaspati / Brahmaṇaspati (Lord of the Word; organizer of the inner hosts)

Chandas

Mantra 6

Inside Sukta 23

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

A direct summons to the ‘Gaṇapati’—Brahmaṇaspati—as the foremost king of mantras, asked to hear and sit in the worshipper’s seat (RV 2.23.1).

  2. Development

The hymn expands his powers: he perfects the hymn, gathers energies, grants fullness and victorious vitality, and shields the sacrificer from hostile intent and corrosive speech.

  3. Climax

The turning point is the prayer for the highest fullness with Bṛhaspati and the overcoming of the ill-speaker through well-affirming thoughts (RV 2.23.10).

  4. Where it settles

It closes by naming him the guide of the very hymn, asking him to strengthen progeny/lineage and grant the capacity to ‘speak the Vast’ in the assembly under divine protection (RV 2.23.19).
