Sukta 6.68

Rishi

Bharadvāja (Bārhaspatya) tradition (Sukta 6.68).

Devata

Indra–Varuṇa (dual).

Chandas

Inside Sukta 68

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

The hymn opens by declaring the sacrifice ready—barhis laid and the rite harmoniously set in motion—explicitly inviting Indra–Varuṇa for great impulse and grace (RV 6.68.1).

  2. Development

It develops by extolling the pair as supreme and most forceful, whose power operates through ṛta to destroy obstruction and to enlarge the fortunes of generous patrons (RV 6.68.2).

  3. Climax

The peak is the prayer for effective protection and for rayi and dyumná to be carried across the turbulence of battles—victory that brings luminous fulfillment, not mere domination (cf. RV 6.68.7).

  4. Where it settles

It resolves by settling into confident reliance on their guardianship: the rite, aligned with ṛta, is expected to yield prosperity, protection, and sustained splendor for the worshipper and community.

The deity: Indra–Varuṇa

  • In the VedaIndra–Varuṇa are praised as a complementary pair: Indra as the force that breaks obstacles and wins battles, Varuṇa as the sovereign who upholds ṛta, binds wrongdoing, and stabilizes the moral-cosmic law. Together they are called strongest among heroes and most generous to patrons, acting “by ṛta” to overcome vṛtra-like obstruction.
  • Cosmic functionThey maintain the world through a twofold governance—dynamic victory (Indra) and lawful order (Varuṇa)—securing rain/abundance, social stability, and the triumph of truth over chaos.
  • Inner significancePsychologically, the pair signifies disciplined power: the will to overcome inner resistance (Indra) guided by conscience, restraint, and truth-alignment (Varuṇa). Spiritual progress is framed as conquest that remains ethical and harmonized with ṛta.

The seer

  • Bharadvāja (Bārhaspatya tradition)Bharadvāja gotra; Bārhaspatya (Angirasa-related) priestly lineage · A major Rigvedic seer-family associated especially with Mandala 6, noted for powerful ritual diction and for linking martial victory with ṛta (cosmic order).
