RV 10.16 to hymn pogrzebowy do Agni Jātavedasa, proszący ogień kremacyjny o przemianę zmarłego bez gwałtownego „rozproszenia”, i o odprowadzenie osoby do Pitṛs (Ojców/przodków).

Inside Sukta 16

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

A protective plea to Agni: burn in the right way—do not scorch, scatter, or mutilate; treat the body with ritual care.

  2. Development

Agni is praised and instructed as the skilled transformer who ‘cooks’ the mortal form into readiness, while the rite’s implements and offerings are kept auspicious and properly aligned.

  3. Climax

The decisive commissioning: once the preparation is complete, Agni is asked to send the departed forward to the Pitṛs—crossing from the human sphere to the ancestral world.

  4. Where it settles

The hymn closes by pacifying and brightening the fire with cooling/gladdening powers, ensuring the rite ends in calm, order, and safe conveyance.

The deity: Agni

  • In the VedaAgni is the divine Fire—household flame, sacrificial mouth of the gods, and knower of births (Jātavedas)—who receives offerings and carries them to the deities; in funerary contexts he also receives the body and prepares the path beyond.
  • Cosmic functionMediator and transformer: he converts material forms into subtle conveyance, transports oblations to the gods, and in the funeral rite conducts the departed toward the Pitṛs while maintaining ṛta (right order) through the ritual fire.
  • Inner significanceThe discerning inner heat that digests experience and releases the subtle person from attachments—purifying, clarifying, and guiding consciousness from one state to another without fragmentation.

The seer

  • Funerary hymn seer of RV 10.16 (Anukramaṇī attribution varies across recensions)Associated with one of the Rig Veda’s principal cremation/funeral hymns, shaping the ritual language that addresses Agni as the conductor of the dead to the ancestral world.

Also by this seer

  • Related funerary material in Mandala 10 is often transmitted with variable seer attributions across recensions (Anukramaṇī traditions).
  • The seer is cited primarily in connection with the funeral-rite corpus rather than a large, stable set of additional hymns under a single fixed name.

The rite, step by step

  • Kindle and establish the funeral fire with Agni invoked as Jātavedas.
  • Address Agni to ‘not scatter’ or harm the person improperly; request a measured, ritually correct burning.
  • Ask Agni to ‘prepare/ripen’ (śṛtam kṛ-) the deceased—transforming the bodily form into a fit vehicle for passage.
  • Commend and dispatch the departed onward to the Pitṛs, affirming continuity with the ancestral realm.
  • Maintain ritual implements/vessels and offerings (e.g., cup/ladle imagery) as properly oriented and protected in the rite.
  • Conclude with pacification: cooling/gladdening invocations that soothe and brighten the fire, sealing the rite in auspicious order.

Offerings

  • Ghee/clarified butter (ājya) into the fire
  • Funerary fuel/wood and kindling
  • Ritual oblations accompanying cremation (havis)
  • Vessels/implements symbolically protected (e.g., camasa ‘cup/chalice’)

Frequently Asked Questions

It is a Rig Vedic funerary hymn used in cremation-related rites, asking Agni to conduct the burning correctly and to guide the departed onward to the Pitṛs (ancestors).

The language emphasizes a ritually proper, non-violent transformation: Agni should ‘prepare’ the person for passage, not destroy in a chaotic way. It reflects a concern for order (ṛta) and safe transition.

The Pitṛs are the ancestral Fathers—those who have gone before. The hymn asks Agni to send the departed to join that ancestral community in its proper realm.
