Inside Sukta 100

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

A direct summons to Indra: be firm, be present, awaken through Soma for the worshippers’ growth; Savitṛ and Aditi are immediately brought in as protectors and the chosen totality.

  2. Development

The hymn moves from martial-confidence and gain to moral-ritual self-justification: the singers deny hidden or open wrongdoing against the gods and ask not to be clothed in anṛta; Aditi is repeatedly selected as the condition of wholeness and safety.

  3. Climax

The ethical-protective plea peaks in the rejection of the ‘covering-form of untruth’ and the decisive choosing of Aditi as sarvatāti, making victory inseparable from truth and integrity.

  4. Where it settles

It closes in heroic, luminous imagery—radiance, guarded will (kratu), and the seeker pressing swiftly toward the ‘Cow of Light’—signaling successful advance to the foremost summit (agra) under divine aid.

The deity: Indra

  • In the VedaIndra is praised as Maghavan, the bountiful Soma-drinker, firm and wakeful at the call of praise, granting winning enjoyment and increase. Savitṛ appears as the divine impeller and guardian who leads the worship toward what is “heard/true” (śrutam), while Aditi is invoked as the boundless, unbroken wholeness that wards off the ‘covering’ of anṛta.
  • Cosmic functionIndra breaks obstruction, releases powers of light and gain, and secures victory and expansion for the community; Savitṛ sets beings in motion and protects the right course; Aditi holds the cosmic order as undivided totality, sheltering life within ṛta.
  • Inner significanceIndra symbolizes awakened will-force and victorious clarity that overcomes inner resistance; Savitṛ is the illumining impulse that turns the mind toward the true inspiration; Aditi is integrality—freedom from constriction, guilt, and falsehood—restoring the psyche to a wide, truthful wholeness.
