Inside Sukta 109

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

The poet declares a clear inner vision and acknowledges Indrāgnī as the unique source of true understanding, then ‘fashions’ an inspired thought that brings strength and plenitude.

  2. Development

Praise turns to their practical gifts: leadership, protection, and especially the right distribution of wealth; their heroic reputation (Vṛtra-slaying) is recalled to ground the request in precedent.

  3. Climax

A direct ritual summons: Indrāgnī are asked to sit on the barhis in this very sacrifice and to rejoice in the pressed Soma—making the hymn’s purpose immediately operative.

  4. Where it settles

The hymn ends with a protective and expansive blessing, widening the circle to Mitra-Varuṇa, Aditi, Sindhu, Earth, and Heaven to ‘increase’ and uphold the worshiper.

The deity: Indrāgnī

  • In the VedaIndrāgnī are praised as a united power: Indra, the thunderbolt-bearing breaker of forts and slayer of Vṛtra, joined with Agni, the sacrificial fire and divine messenger who carries offerings. Together they are invited to the barhis, to drink Soma, and to protect the worshiper in struggles and burdens.
  • Cosmic functionThey coordinate heaven’s force (Indra’s victorious might and rain-releasing power) with the sacrificial order on earth (Agni’s fire, mediation, and conveyance of oblations), ensuring prosperity, protection, and the right distribution of riches.
  • Inner significanceIndra symbolizes courageous will and victorious clarity that overcomes obstruction; Agni symbolizes aspiration, discipline, and the illumined flame of offering. As a pair they represent integrated power—inner fire guided into effective action—yielding both insight (dhī) and success (vāja).

Frequently Asked Questions

Indrāgnī means Indra and Agni praised together as one paired divinity—Indra as the victorious force and Agni as the sacrificial fire who carries offerings.

It asks them to come to the sacrifice, sit on the sacred grass, enjoy the pressed Soma, distribute riches fairly, and protect the worshiper in conflicts and heavy trials.

The closing expands the blessing: after invoking Indrāgnī for active help, the poet asks the wider sustaining powers of order and creation to increase and uphold the worshiper.
