Soma Pavamāna
Mantra 1
Mantra 2
Mantra 3
Mantra 4
Mantra 5
Mantra 6
Soma’s mighty streams begin to flow freely through the filter, and purification is linked to the stirring of inspired speech.
The hymn tracks Soma’s forward surge—his clarified movement and purposeful advance from flowing current to prepared receptacles.
Soma, fully purifying, presses beyond the stream and takes his seat in the vats—read as the stabilization of clarified delight/power.
A direct ritual charge: press the most honey-rich Soma for Indra, so the gathered powers attain beautiful exhilaration.
punāno vācam iṣyati
abhi droṇāny āsadam
madhumattamaṃ somam indrāya vajriṇe
It celebrates Soma as he is purified through the filter, becomes clarified in the vats, and is then pressed as the sweetest offering—especially for Indra—to bring strength and inspired speech.
Because purified Soma is seen as awakening inner inspiration: as the offering becomes clear, the worshipper’s mind and speech become clear and powerful for prayer and insight.
The deity praised is Soma in his purifying form (Pavamāna), but the final verse highlights that the refined Soma is pressed for Indra, the thunderbolt-bearer, to empower him and the divine host.
