Mantras

Mantra 1

Mantra 2

Mantra 3

Mantra 4

Mantra 5

Mantra 6

Mantra 7

Mantra 8

Mantra 9

Mantra 10

Mantra 11

Mantra 12

Mantra 13

Mantra 14

Inside Sukta 34

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

The hymn opens with the gambler’s visceral intoxication: the dice arrive like a potent Soma-draught, shaking and seizing the mind (10.34.1).

  2. Development

It expands into the social and moral wreckage—loss of wealth, alienation from family, and the dice’s uncanny sovereignty, stronger than anger or royal power (cf. 10.34.8).

  3. Climax

A clear recognition of compulsion: the dice are not mere objects but a dominating force that overturns will and order, demanding submission and causing repeated downfall.

  4. Where it settles

The hymn turns toward restraint and reconciliation: establish friendship, seek kindness, and redirect misfortune away from oneself—placing it ‘in the snare of the brown ones’ (the dice) (10.34.14).

The deity: Akṣāḥ — personified

  • In the VedaThe dice are addressed as a powerful ‘troop’ that plays, conquers, and compels obedience; they are wakeful, fear-bringing, and irresistible, treated almost like a deity demanding reverence (e.g., “even a king bows to them”).
  • Cosmic functionThey embody the coercive, fate-like force of chance and compulsion—an inversion of ṛta (order) where randomness masquerades as sovereignty over human intention.
  • Inner significanceA portrait of addiction: craving, loss of agency, relapse, and the collapse of dharma in family and society; the ‘dice’ externalize the inner tyrant of obsession and the mind’s surrender to it.

The seer

  • Kavasha AilūṣaAilūṣa (patronymic; later tradition associates him with the Āṅgirasa sphere, but the Rigvedic evidence is not definitive) · Traditional seer of RV 10.34, renowned for the most psychologically acute Rigvedic depiction of gambling/addiction and its social fallout.
