Inside Sukta 70

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

A direct aspiration to win the ancient, established riches through ārya-manīṣā, with Agni invoked to secure all attainments (1.70.1).

  2. Development

Agni is praised as the conscious knower who upholds the broad bases of the rite and understands the becoming of gods and mortals—thereby able to protect right emergence and progress (e.g., 1.70.6).

  3. Climax

Agni’s knowing power and guardianship become the decisive force: he stands as the inner and outer champion who makes the path firm and the sacrifice effective.

  4. Where it settles

The hymn closes by depicting Agni as straight, non-grasping, skillful and heroic—blazing and formidable in battles—leaving the worshipper under his protection and victorious energy (1.70.11).

  • Inner significanceThe awakened will and discerning intelligence that ‘knows’ (cikitva) the right birth of higher states; the inner fire that guards wide foundations, purifies motives, and gives courage in the battles within.

The seer
