Sukta 3

Rishi: Atharvanic tradition (often transmitted without a single named ṛṣi for brief bhaiṣajya charms in AVŚ 1); attributed generically to Atharvan/Angiras lineages in later indices.

Devata: Parjanya (Rain), as releasing/effusive power.

Chandas: Anuṣṭubh (with Atharvanic irregularities/extended cadence in the closing).

Inside Sukta 3

How it unfolds

  1. How it opens

Begins with a diagnostic heading (mūtra-mocanam) and a knowledge-claim: the practitioner ‘knows’ the potent source—Parjanya, father of the reed, endowed with hundredfold virility.

  2. What it asks

Let the patient’s outpouring (niṣecana) be on the earth and be outside of him—i.e., urine released outward without hindrance.

  3. Where its power lies

The mantra itself acts as the operative tool: the urinary passage is ‘cleft,’ the stopper (vartra) is broken, and the flow is commanded to loosen completely.

  4. How it closes

A repeated sealing particle/formula (bāl iti) and the outward-direction refrain (bahis) function as the charm’s verbal ‘lock,’ fixing the discharge as accomplished and externalized.

Famous verses

Verse 1.3.1Sets the rite’s purpose (mūtra-mocana) and establishes Parjanya as the paradigmatic releaser whose effusion is transferred to the patient’s body and directed onto the earth.Read verse 1.3.1 →

Verse 1.3.5Reinforces the same channel-opening logic through a solar variant (‘father of the reed’ as Sūrya), linking generative heat/light with unblocking and welfare (śam) for the body.Read verse 1.3.5 →

Verse 1.3.7The most explicitly surgical/apotropaic line: the practitioner ‘splits’ the urinary obstruction (vartra), commanding total outward release—an archetypal Atharvanic unbinding move.Read verse 1.3.7 →

Kind of hymn

Bhaisajya (Healing)

What it is for

To relieve urinary retention/obstruction by splitting the ‘stopper’ (vartra/bandha), restoring unobstructed urination, and re-establishing bodily ease and welfare.

Who it is for

Household healers and Atharvanic practitioners treating urinary blockage; also suitable for family rites for quick relief in acute retention.

Also used as

  • Shantika
  • Paustika

The deity

Parjanya is the effusive, releasing power of rain—an archetype for loosening, pouring forth, and restoring circulation; in this hymn he functions as the cosmic precedent for bodily discharge and relief from blockage.

Powers of the deity

  • Releases waters and breaks drought-like restraint
  • Opens channels and restores flow
  • Quickens and refreshes the body (iṣ/śam)
  • Drives the harmful condition outward (bahis)

Why the deity is called

Invoked to model and compel the patient’s urine to pour freely, transforming retention into outward discharge, with the earth as the proper receptacle for the expelled fluid.

The seer

  • Atharvan–Āṅgirasa (anonymous Atharvanic healer)Atharvan. Bhaiṣajya and apotropaic unbinding charms (bandha-vimocana), especially for bodily obstruction, retention, and channel-opening rites using mantra as the primary instrument.

Other hymns of this seer

  • AVŚ 1.2
  • AVŚ 1.4
  • AVŚ 2.31

Preparing for the rite

  • Seat the patient on bare earth or on a clean spread over earth, facing an open space (symbolically ‘outward’).
  • Prepare clean water for sprinkling/niṣecana; if available, place a reed (śara) or reed-stalk nearby as a channel-opening emblem.
  • Maintain purity of speech; the practitioner should be calm and avoid interrupting the sequence of recitation.

The rite

  • Recite the hymn in order, emphasizing the outward-direction formula (bahis te astu / bahir).
  • Perform a light sprinkling (niṣecana) toward the lower abdomen and then onto the ground, transferring the ‘outpouring’ to earth.
  • At the ‘splitting’ verse (e.g., 1.3.7), make a gentle opening gesture with the hand (as if parting a way), directing the obstruction to break and depart outward.

What it needs

  • Clean water for niṣecana (sprinkling)
  • Earth contact (pṛthivī) as receptacle
  • Reed/śara (optional emblem of watery channels)

When

At onset of retention or difficulty in passing urine; preferably in daylight or before sunset for clarity and ‘opening’ symbolism.

The main substance

Clean water used for niṣecana (sprinkling), with earth as the receiving ground

Herbs

  • Śara (reed; emblematic/ritual plant rather than a pharmacological drug in this sūkta)

Amulets

  • Reed-stalk tie or simple cord placed near the patient as a symbolic ‘channel’ (optional, tradition-dependent)

How it is prepared

Keep water in a clean vessel; sprinkle lightly toward the lower abdomen and then onto the earth while reciting the outward-release refrain; place/hold a reed as a sign of opened watery pathways.

Frequently Asked Questions

It is recited to relieve difficulty or blockage in urination, treating the condition as an obstruction to be loosened and sent outward.

Parjanya embodies the power of releasing waters. The hymn uses rain as the cosmic model to compel the body’s retained fluid to pour out freely.

The text primarily works through mantra and simple rite: directing the flow outward and using water-sprinkling and earth-contact as symbols of discharge. A reed (śara) may be used as an emblem, but no specific drug is required by the verses cited.
