They sang forth the ancient ‘stations’ (dhāmāni). When they rose, the clear-seeing ‘separators’ opened the paths. The ordainers set the powers in their distinct places; unceasing, thinking the ṛta, the wondrous ones shone.
The mantra describes the inner dawn of order in consciousness. The ‘ancient stations’ are stable planes or abiding states of the soul already known to the seers. When aspiration rises (ucchān), discerning powers (viyotāraḥ) separate truth from mixture—light from obscurity—so the inner paths become navigable. The vidhātāraḥ are the formative gods (powers of ṛta) who arrange movements of thought, life-force, and will into right functioning. Continuous ṛta-thinking (ṛtadhītayaḥ) is the yogic habit of aligning perception and action to the truth-order, causing the luminous faculties to manifest steadily.
Progress becomes swift when discernment separates the essential from the confused, and when one’s faculties are placed in right relation by a governing truth-principle. True illumination is not a momentary flash but a sustained order of consciousness.
cosmic-ordination, illumination, discrimination, primordial-order
Vāmadeva hymns in Maṇḍala 4 often articulate the emergence of ṛta through inner illumination and right arrangement of powers (Āditya-order, Indra-light, Agni-will).
Vāmadeva is a paradigmatic seer of ‘right seeing’ where the gods are psychological powers: his vision emphasizes the ordered ascent—discrimination, formation, and steady radiance of truth-consciousness.
They establish the cosmic order (ṛta), differentiate the paths, and assign each power its proper field—maintaining the harmony of worlds.
In the sadhana: discernment, right arrangement of faculties, and stable illumination that prevents relapse into confusion.
Recitation to affirm the establishment of dhāman (cosmic stations) and to invoke discriminative clarity (vi-yotāraḥ) in the ritual and inner practice.

4 pādas × ~11 syllables
Forward-driving, declarative, with strong caesura supporting ‘unfolding’ imagery.
Builds a sense of ordered emergence—good for chanting when seeking clarity, discrimination, and steady inner alignment.
Recitation to affirm the establishment of dhāman (cosmic stations) and to invoke discriminative clarity (vi-yotāraḥ) in the ritual and inner practice.
General praise in soma/agnicayana contexts where ṛta and divine ordering are invoked; also suitable as a contemplative recitation for mental clarity.
Recitation during stotra/śastra segments emphasizing cosmic order; inwardly, a ‘placing’ of faculties before meditation.
Use before study/decision-making: chant to invoke discrimination (viyotāraḥ) and right arrangement (vidhātāraḥ) of thought and action.
dhāman: ‘station/law’ from √dhā ‘place/establish’—the placed order of being. vi-yotāraḥ from vi- + √yu ‘separate’: powers that differentiate and thereby make intelligible (inner discrimination). ṛta-dhīti: dhīti ‘thought, inspiration’ aligned with ṛta—cognitive conformity to cosmic order. √ruc ‘shine’ marks manifestation of knowledge/light.
ṛta (truth-order), dhāman (stations/laws), discrimination/separation (vi-yu)
Explicit: ṛtadhītayaḥ—illumined thought aligned to ṛta is the engine of stable radiance.
Truth is not merely known but ‘placed’—made functional in the parts of the being.
Cosmic manifestation as differentiation and placement of powers into their proper domains.
Proto-Vedāntic/Integral-yogic reading (Aurobindonian): ascent through discrimination and ordering toward truth-consciousness.
dawn-like emergence (implicit via ‘rising’)
As dawn separates forms from night, inner discrimination separates movements and establishes them in right places, producing steady illumination.
Discrimination and right placement of faculties under the governance of ṛta (truth-order).
Ājñā (discernment) and Sahasrāra (truth-order above mind)
Nadi-śodhana (gentle alternate-nostril) before chanting; then natural breath with a slight pause at pāda ends.
From scattered mind to ordered, luminous clarity; ‘widened’ and steady attention.
After chanting, review your inner movements: name them, separate mixed motives, and ‘place’ each in its proper function (will, thought, feeling) under a single truth-intent.
Follow RV śākhā recitation with udatta on marked syllables; svarita on following fall; anudatta as unmarked low—exact pattern requires pada-based svara marks from a svara-text.
Hold udatta slightly higher; let svarita glide downward; keep cadence strong at pāda ends (Triṣṭubh).
: long ā; ‘n’ clear, : pronounce vi-yo-tā-raḥ with long ā, : vocalic ṛ in ṛta; dhī is long ī, : roll ‘r’, keep ‘c’ as ‘ch’ (palatal)
Clear, steady, slightly bright (to support ‘ordering’ and ‘shining’ imagery).
