Auspicious are the Waters: the Waters were, indeed, ghee; bearing Agni and Soma—those Waters indeed. Let their keen essence, honey-blent and harmless, come unto me together with breath and with splendour.
The waters are auspicious; they are likened to ghee and said to bear Agni and Soma. Their sharp (keen) essence, mixed with honey and harmless, is invoked to come with prāṇa (breath/life) and varcas (splendour/vigour).
Healing is the reintegration of opposites: fire (Agni) and cool nectar (Soma) held together in a single medium. The ‘keen essence’ is disciplined vitality—strong yet non-injurious—arriving as renewed breath and confidence.
True nourishment is both potent and non-harming; vitality arises when transformative fire and restorative sweetness are harmonized in the body and mind.
To ingest/receive consecrated water as a tonic that restores prāṇa (life-breath) and varcas (vigour/splendour), framed as a safe, honeyed essence.

Sāyaṇa emphasizes the identification of waters with ghṛta as a statement of nourishing unctuousness and sacrificial purity. ‘Bearing Agni and Soma’ is taken as waters containing both heating and life-sap principles, hence fit for healing. ‘Tīvra rasa’ is the concentrated medicinal efficacy; ‘madhupṛcā’ indicates a sweet, tonic admixture; ‘araṅga’ assures non-injury. The optative prayer seeks prāṇa and varcas as concrete therapeutic outcomes.
Anukramaṇī-anonymous (Atharvanic water-healing complex)
Bhaiṣajya and pauṣṭika consecrations: transforming ordinary water into a tonic by identifying it with sacrificial substances and divine dyads.
Shows Atharvan ‘pharmakon-vāc’: speech makes water into ghṛta/madhu-like nourishment, fit to carry life-breath and radiance.
Āpas (Waters) as bearers of Agni and Soma
Waters are the universal solvent and carrier: they hold fire and moon-nectar together, enabling both digestion/transformation and cooling restoration.
Tonicizing and restorative; supports prāṇa and varcas; conceptually ‘nectarized’ water for recovery and strength.
Harmless potency implies protection from adverse effects, poison, and excess heat/agitation.
Often transmitted as two longer pādas or four uneven pādas; Atharvanic recitation tolerates elongation around compounds (agnīṣomau, madhupṛcām).
Mixed cadence with mantra-prose feel; emphasis falls on semantic beats (bhadrā/ghṛtam/agnīṣomau… prāṇena/varcasā).
Invocatory and ‘drawing-in’ (ā… gamet) with a tonic, uplifting pull.
Energizes while staying soothing; evokes a sense of safe potency entering the body.
Prepare a drink: water with a small measure of honey and/or ghee (as prescribed by the prayoga).
Recite the mantra over the mixture, focusing on ‘tīvra rasa’ and ‘madhupṛcā’.
Have the patient sip three times (or administer in measured sips), synchronizing with calm breathing to ‘bring prāṇa’.
Optionally anoint the chest/forehead with a trace of the mixture to externalize ‘varcas’.
Kauśika Sūtra: prāśana (sipping) and āpyāyana (invigoration) with honey/ghee-water; also used in varcasya rites (edition-dependent numbering)
Atharvan priest compounds and consecrates the tonic, administers it, and verbally ‘installs’ prāṇa/varcas through the optative formulation.
Recite over drinking water; optionally add a small amount of honey (if appropriate) as ‘madhupṛcā’ enactment; use for aspersion in sickroom.
Morning or before meals during recovery; also before travel as protective vitality rite.
Householder recitation; healer/purohita may supervise if part of a larger bhaiṣajya sequence.
Kauśika water-sipping/sprinkling procedures commonly cluster with AV water hymns (general alignment; exact citation depends on paddhati).
Mindful hydration ritual; pair with physician-approved nutrition and rest.
Āpas (water); Ghṛta (ghee); Madhu (honey) (implied by madhupṛcā); Agni-Soma (conceptual dyad carried by waters)
Āpaḥ as tonic water, ideally drawn clean and offered/charged by mantra.
Agni explicitly (as carried within waters).
The mantra ‘alchemizes’ water into a complete remedy: unctuous nourishment (ghṛta), sweetness (madhu), transformative power (Agni), and restorative nectar (Soma)—potent yet araṅga (non-harming).
General debility, loss of breath/strength, convalescence; heat-agitation needing safe replenishment.
Consecrated water as a carrier of balanced potency (Agni-Soma), bringing prāṇa and varcas; ‘honey-blent’ suggests palatability and assimilation.
Rasāyana-like framing (varcas/ojas-adjacent); balancing pitta (cool sweet waters) while supporting agni (digestive fire) without harm.
Oral hydration/tonic intake during fatigue; warm/cool fluids with honey (where appropriate) for convalescence; psychosomatic uplift through ritual.
Patient/reciter drinking or being sprinkled with consecrated water.
To make water a safe but powerful tonic that restores breath (prāṇa) and radiance (varcas).
Substance-identification (water = ghṛta), deity-infusion (Agni-Soma), and invitational drawing-in (ā… gamet).
Toxicity, adverse effects, weakness, loss of lustre, post-illness depletion.
Vitality, attractiveness, strength, ‘glow’ (varcas)
Invite balanced potency: warmth of transformation and cool nectar of restoration entering as breath and radiance.
Maṇipūra (Agni) harmonized with Svādhiṣṭhāna (Āpas) and Anāhata (prāṇa flow).
Sama-vṛtti (equal inhale/exhale) to symbolize Agni-Soma balance; finish with a few cooling breaths if overheated.
Golden honey-light dissolving into clear water; two lights (flame and moon) merge and flow into the chest as steady breath.
Replenishing pratyāhāra leading to calm vitality.
Chant, then sip slowly; feel breath deepen and posture brighten (varcas).
Keep the opening ‘āpo bhadrā’ bright and lifted; lengthen the invitational ‘ā mā … gamet’ slightly to ‘draw’ the essence in.
Mark semantic stresses: bhadrāḥ / ghṛtam / agnīṣomau / tīvraḥ rasaḥ / prāṇena / varcasā.
Warm, nourishing, slightly uplifting.
If used for drinking, recite an odd number (3/7/9) and sip in small measures, maintaining ritual cleanliness (śauca).
7 times
Convalescence, fatigue, low vitality, loss of confidence/‘glow’.
Before drinking water in the morning; before/after medicine; after fever subsides (rebuilding phase).
Subjective increase in steadiness of breath, calm energy, and sense of nourishment; supports hydration habits.
Honey is not for infants; avoid additives if medically contraindicated (diabetes, allergies). Seek medical care for persistent weakness.
The verse encodes a pharmacological logic without naming plants: water is the solvent/vehicle; honey and ghee (nutritive ‘anupāna’) render the ‘rasa’ palatable and strengthening. The mantra sacralizes the mixture as simultaneously nutritive (ghṛta), tonic (madhu), and safely non-injuring (araṅga).
Varcas is both bodily health and social radiance; the rite thus aims at embodied well-being and public standing. The priestly mediation of ‘Agni-Soma’ within a domestic drink shows sacrificial categories being domesticated for household benefit.
The identification ‘waters are ghee’ is a bold equivalence typical of Vedic poetic ontology, but the explicit therapeutic targeting of prāṇa and varcas is especially Atharvanic in its applied orientation.
Gopatha’s Atharvanic framework often treats prāṇa and varcas as ritually augmentable substances/qualities. This mantra provides the mechanism: a consecrated ingestible medium carrying sacrificial dyads (Agni-Soma) transfers vitality into the patient.
