Sukta 29

Rishi: Atharvanic tradition; hymn-level attribution varies by anukramaṇī.

Devata: Mitra–Varuṇa

Chandas: Likely Triṣṭubh (requires full metrical verification).

Inside Sukta 29

How it unfolds

  1. How it opens

The hymn opens by acknowledging Mitra–Varuṇa as ṛta-upholders, united in purpose, who repel treachery and aid the truthful in struggle.

  2. What it asks

A repeated plea for liberation: “release us from aṃhas,” i.e., from sin, anguish, and the constricting aftermath of wrongdoing or hostile deception.

  3. Where its power lies

Their proven help to earlier exemplars (Śyāvāśva, Vādhryaśva, Purumīḍha, Atri, Vimada, Saptavadhri) is cited as precedent—what they did then, they can do now; their ‘true-path chariot’ actively punishes the corrupter.

  4. How it closes

The conclusion intensifies personal reliance—praise and urgent calling in need—ending with the sealing petition for release from aṃhas under their decisive protection.

Kind of hymn

Pāpmamocana (Sin-release) / Rakṣā (Protection)

What it is for

Release from aṃhas (sin/calamity), removal of treachery-driven harm, and establishment of safety and moral clarity under Mitra–Varuṇa’s guardianship.

Who it is for

Householders, litigants, oath-takers, and anyone facing accusation, deceit, social conflict, or remorse who seeks purification and protective vindication.

Also used as

  • Rakṣā (protective)
  • Pāpmamocana (sin-release/prāyaścitta-like)
  • Nīti/Dharma (social-legal, truth/oath protection)

The deity

A paired sovereignty of covenant and cosmic order: Mitra presides over agreement, friendship, and social bonds; Varuṇa over ṛta, surveillance of truth, and the binding/unbinding of transgression.

Powers of the deity

  • Uphold ṛta (cosmic and moral order)
  • Detect falsehood, deceit, and corruption
  • Bind offenders with pāśa (moral/ritual bonds) and release the repentant or wronged
  • Protect the truthful in conflict and litigation-like struggle
  • Punish the treacherous and drive away hostile accusers

Why the deity is called

They are invoked to annul the consequences of sin/distress (aṃhas), especially where truth is contested, and to secure both protection and vindication through their authority over oaths, bonds, and right conduct.

The seer

  • Atharvanic seer (anukramaṇī attribution varies)Atharvan. Pāpmamocana and rakṣā charms: rites of release from moral fault (aṃhas), protection in disputes, and restoration of truth-order (satya/ṛta) under oath-like pressure.

Other hymns of this seer

  • AV 4.29 (this hymn)

Preparing for the rite

  • Choose a clean, quiet place; bathe or wash hands/face as a basic śauca (purity) act.
  • Set a small water vessel (ācamana/śānti water) and, if available, a simple offering setup (ghee lamp or a small fire).
  • Form a satya-saṅkalpa (truth-intent): silently affirm truthful speech and non-deceit for the duration of the rite.

The rite

  • Recite the sukta in full (7 mantras), keeping the recurring petition for release from aṃhas as the mental focus.
  • At the end of each verse (or at least at the refrain-like petition), touch or sprinkle water on the head/heart as a sign of loosening bonds and cooling distress.
  • Optionally offer a small oblation (ghee) or a verbal offering (namas) to Mitra–Varuṇa, asking that falsehood be driven away and truth be established.

What it needs

  • Clean water (for śānti and symbolic unbinding)
  • Optional ghee/clarified butter (for simple offering)
  • Optional white thread or cord (as a symbolic ‘bond’ to be loosened/untied at the end)

When

Preferably at dawn or early morning; also suitable immediately before/after an oath, hearing, reconciliation meeting, or when distress from accusation is acute.

The main substance

Water (śānti-jala) as a carrier of cooling, cleansing, and ‘release’ symbolism aligned with satya/ṛta.

Amulets

  • White thread/cord (to symbolize bonds; untie after recitation)

How it is prepared

Keep water in a clean vessel; during or after recitation, sip/ācamana and sprinkle a few drops on head/heart. If using a cord, tie a simple knot before recitation and untie it at the end while repeating the release petition.

Frequently Asked Questions

Aṃhas is a broad word for sin and the distress or constriction that follows it—misfortune, anxiety, or harm arising from wrongdoing, deceit, or hostile accusation.

Together they govern truth and covenant: Mitra stabilizes agreements and social trust, while Varuṇa enforces ṛta and can bind or release moral fault. Their joint power suits situations involving oaths, disputes, and purification.

No. The hymn is primarily a truth-and-release invocation. A simple practice uses clean water and sincere satya-saṅkalpa; optional offerings or a symbolic cord can reinforce the ‘unbinding’ intention.
