Inside Sukta 29

How it unfolds

  1. How it opens

The hymn opens by declaring long life as an established endowment, grounded in ‘earthly sap’ and apportioned auspiciously (Bhaga), with divine forces setting life and radiance in the person.

  2. What it asks

Explicit petitions ask Agni Jātavedas to bestow life, Tvaṣṭṛ to set progeny firmly, and Savitar to impel the thriving increase of wealth—culminating in the formula ‘may he live a hundred autumns.’

  3. Where its power lies

The mantra asserts that vital strength (ūrjā), self-potent and undecaying, has been sent forth as an effective remedial power; radiance and continuity are presented as the natural consequence of that implanted force.

  4. How it closes

It seals the blessing by averting the harmful ‘streaming/onrush’ of the condition and affirming that the healers have already wrought the cure—thereby fixing the result in speech.

Kind of hymn

Paustika (Prosperity) / Āyuṣya (Longevity) with Prajā (Fertility) emphasis

What it is for

To establish long life (ideally ‘a hundred autumns’), bodily strength and radiance, secure progeny, and flourishing prosperity while preventing early decline or draining afflictions.

Who it is for

Householders and ritual specialists (Atharvan priests/vaidya-type healers) performing blessings for a named beneficiary—especially for health, fertility, and sustained well-being in the household.

Also used as

  • Āyuṣya
  • Bhaisajya
  • Śāntika

The deity

A composite benedictive power-set: Agni as the all-knowing carrier of offerings and life-heat; Tvaṣṭṛ as the shaper who ‘sets’ progeny and bodily form; Savitar as the impeller who releases increase and auspicious motion; allied deities secure radiance, allotment, and protective counsel.

Powers of the deity

  • Bestows and stabilizes āyus (life-span)
  • Fixes prajā (progeny) and generative continuity
  • Imparts varcas (radiance, vigor, social/physical brilliance)
  • Increases rāyas-poṣa (thriving prosperity and nourishment)
  • Averts premature decay and harmful ‘flowing/streaming’ conditions (wasting, hemorrhagic or draining afflictions in Atharvanic idiom)
  • Ratifies the efficacy of healing work (bhiṣaj/ritual-physician agency)

Why the deity is called

They are invoked to confer a complete human good: long life anchored in bodily strength, fertility firmly ‘set,’ and wealth’s increase ‘impelled,’ with a final assurance that the remedy’s vital sap (ūrjā) is self-potent and unaging.

The seer

  • Atharvanic/Āṅgirasa-type seer (generic attribution in this context)Atharvan. Āyuṣya and paustika benedictions: charms for long life, bodily strength (bala), radiance (varcas), fertility (prajā), and stable prosperity; often framed as “implanting” life and averting premature wasting.

Other hymns of this seer

  • AV 2.28 (adjacent āyuṣya/paustika material, recensional proximity)
  • AV 3.11 (āyuṣya-type long-life blessings, thematic parallel)
  • AV 19.67 (dīrghāyuḥ/śataṃ śaradaḥ longevity formulae, later Atharvanic parallels)

Preparing for the rite

  • Prepare a clean, quiet domestic space; seat the beneficiary facing east or toward the household fire.
  • Arrange a small fire or lamp as Agni’s support; keep clean water and nourishing food (milk/ghee) ready as ‘pārthiva-rasa’ (earthly sap) symbolism.
  • If used as a healing/āyuṣya rite, mark the beneficiary with a simple protective touch (water sprinkling) and establish intent (saṃkalpa) for āyus, prajā, and rāyas-poṣa.

The rite

  • Recite the hymn over the beneficiary, beginning with the long-life establishment verses and moving to the explicit petitions to Agni Jātavedas, Tvaṣṭṛ, and Savitar.
  • Offer a small oblation of ghee (or symbolic offering) at the Agni-invocations; alternatively, touch the head/heart with sanctified water while reciting āyuṣya pādas.
  • Conclude with the sealing verse that affirms undecaying vital strength (ūrjā/svadhā) and the accomplished work of the healers (bhiṣaj), as a spoken ‘ratification.’

What it needs

  • Fire or lamp (Agni support)
  • Ghee or milk (nourishing ‘sap’ symbolism)
  • Clean water for sprinkling/ācamana
  • Optional: a simple thread/amulet to ‘hold’ the blessing (āyuṣya-bandhana)

When

Auspicious daytime (Savitar’s domain), preferably morning; also suitable at life-cycle moments (post-illness recovery, marriage/household establishment, conception/blessing rites).

The main substance

Ghee (ājya) offered to Agni as the stabilizing medium for āyuṣya and paustika increase

Amulets

  • Protective thread/cord (āyuṣya-bandhana)
  • Consecrated water as a portable protection (sprinkled or carried)

How it is prepared

Warm ghee (or milk) for a small offering; consecrate water by mantra-recitation; if using a thread, recite the key āyuṣya pādas while tying it on the right arm (or as local custom) to ‘hold’ life, progeny, and prosperity.
