Mantra 1
वि हि सोतोरसृक्षत नेन्द्रं देवममंसत । यत्रामदद् वृषाकपिरर्यः पुष्टेषु मत्सखा विश्वस्मादिन्द्र उत्तरः
For the pressers were scattered; they gave no thought to Indra the God—there where Vṛṣākapi made revel, the noble one amid prosperities, my comrade in intoxication: Indra is higher than all.
Mantra 2
परा हीन्द्र धावसि वृषाकपेरति व्यथिः । नो अह प्र विन्दस्यन्यत्र सोमपीतये विश्वस्मादिन्द्र उत्तरः
Away, forsooth, thou rushest, O Indra, beyond the trouble of Vṛṣākapi; for us—ah!—thou findest (it) elsewhere, for Soma-drinking: Indra is higher than all.
Mantra 3
किमयं त्वां वृषाकपिश्चकार हरितो मृगः । यस्मा इरस्यसीदु न्व१र्यो वा पुष्टिमद् वसु विश्वस्मादिन्द्र उत्तरः
What hath this Vṛṣākapi done to thee—this tawny beast—at whom thou art jealous, even now? (Is it) the noble one, or the thriving treasure? Indra is higher than all.
Mantra 4
यमिमं त्वं वृषाकपिं प्रियमिन्द्राभिरक्षसि । श्वा न्वस्य जम्भिषदपि कर्णे वराहयुर्विश्वस्मादिन्द्र उत्तरः
Whom—this dear Vṛṣākapi—thou, O Indra, dost guard on every side: now hath the dog seized him with the jaws, even at the ear; boar-impelled—yet Indra is superior unto all.
Mantra 5
प्रिया तष्टानि मे कपिर्व्यक्ता व्यऽदूदुषत्। शिरो न्वऽस्य राविषं न सुगं दुष्कृते भुवं विश्वस्मादिन्द्र उत्तरः
Dear things, well-fashioned for me, the Ape—made manifest—hath scattered forth. Now have I made his head to cry aloud: no easy passage be there for the evil-doer; Indra is superior unto all.
Mantra 6
न मत् स्त्री सुभसत्तरा न सुयाशुतरा भुवत्। न मत् प्रतिच्यवीयसी न सक्थ्युद्यमीयसी विश्वस्मादिन्द्र उत्तरः
No woman shall be better seated than I, nor swifter in fair attainment. None shall outmove me in rivalry, none be more thigh-uplifted than I: Indra is superior unto all.
Mantra 7
उवे अम्ब सुलाभिके यथेवाङ्गं भविष्यति । भसन्मे अम्ब सक्थि मे शिरो मे वीऽव हृष्यति विश्वस्मादिन्द्र उत्तरः
Ho, mother, O thou easy to be won—so, even so, shall my body come to be. My sexual part, O mother, my thigh, my head—each thrills full-forth with joy: Indra is superior unto all.
Mantra 8
किं सुबाहो स्वङ्गुरे पृथुष्टो पृथुजाघने । किं शूरपत्नि नस्त्वमभ्यऽमीषि वृषाकपिं विश्वस्मादिन्द्र उत्तरः
Why, O fair-armed, fair-bodied, broad-thighed one? Why, O hero’s wife, dost thou assail us—(assail) Vṛṣākapi? Indra is superior unto all.
Mantra 9
अवीरामिव मामयं शरारुरभि मन्यते । उताहमस्मि वीरिणीन्द्रपत्नी मरुत्सखा विश्वस्मादिन्द्र उत्तरः
As though I were hero-less, this spiteful stinger deems me so; yet I am a woman rich in heroes, Indra’s consort, with the Maruts for allies—above all, Indra is the higher.
Mantra 10
संहोत्रं स्म पुरा नारी समनं वाव गच्छति । वेधा ऋतस्य वीरिणीन्द्रपत्नी महीयते विश्वस्मादिन्द्र उत्तरः
To the common offering, even of old, the woman verily goes—to the assembly she goes: the Ordainer of Order; the hero-rich wife of Indra is made great—above all, Indra is the higher.
Mantra 11
इन्द्राणीमासु नारिषु सुभगामहमश्रवम्। नह्यऽस्या अपरं चन जरसा मरते पतिर्विश्वस्मादिन्द्र उत्तरः
Indrāṇī, among these women, as fortunate have I heard proclaimed: for of her the husband dies not, not even by age—above all, Indra is the higher.
Mantra 12
नाहमिन्द्राणि रारण सख्युर्वृषाकपेरृते। यस्येदमप्यं हविः प्रियं देवेषु गच्छति विश्वस्मादिन्द्र उत्तरः
I, O Indrāṇī, shall not be bereft of the friendship of Vṛṣākapi; for his this liquid oblation, dear, goes forth among the gods—above all, Indra is the higher.
Mantra 13
वृषाकपायि रेवति सुपुत्र आदु सुस्नुषे । घसच इन्द्र उक्षणः प्रियं काचित्करं हविर्विश्वस्मादिन्द्र उत्तरः
O Vṛṣākapi—O prosperous one, rich in good sons, yea, with good daughters-in-law—Indra too, the devouring Bull, (receives) the dear oblation that makes (all) as one would have it: above all, Indra is the higher.
Mantra 14
उक्ष्णो हि मे पञ्चदश साकं पचन्ति विंशतिम्। उताहमद्मि पीव इदुभा कुक्षी पृणन्ति मे विश्वस्मादिन्द्र उत्तरः
For me, in sooth, they cook at once fifteen, yea twenty, of the bull. And I, moreover, eat the rich fat: both bellies are filled for me. Indra is higher than all.
Mantra 15
वृषभो न तिग्मशृङ्गोऽन्तर्यूथेषु रोरुवत्। मन्थस्त इन्द्र शं हृदे यं ते सुनोति भावयुर्विश्वस्मादिन्द्र उत्तरः
Like a sharp-horned bull, roaring amid the herds: the churned draught, O Indra, is welfare to thy heart, which the quickener presses out for thee. Indra is higher than all.

न सेशे यस्य रम्बतेऽन्तरा सक्थ्या३ कपृत्। सेदीशे यस्य रोमशं निषेदुषो विजृम्भते विश्वस्मादिन्द्र उत्तरः
He lieth not at ease whose member sports betwixt the thighs. He sitteth—whose shaggy one, when he is seated, gapes and stretches wide. Indra is higher than all.

न सेशे यस्य रोमशं निषेदुषो विजृम्भते । सेदीशे यस्य रम्बतेऽन्तरा सक्थ्या३ कपृद् विश्वस्मादिन्द्र उत्तरः
He lieth not at ease whose shaggy one, when he is seated, stretches wide. He sitteth—whose member sports betwixt the thighs. Indra is higher than all.

अयमिन्द्र वृषाकपिः परस्वन्तं हतं विदत्। असिं सूनां नवं चरुमादेधस्यान आचितं विश्वस्मादिन्द्र उत्तरः
This Vṛṣākapi, O Indra, found the Parasvant, smitten down. A new sword of the sons, and the caru, and Ādedha’s wagon heaped with store—Indra is higher than all.
Mantra 19
अयमेमि विचाकशद् विचिन्वन् दासमार्यम्। पिबामि पाकसुत्वनोऽभि धीरमचाकशं विश्वस्मादिन्द्र उत्तरः
Forth go I, clear-shining, choosing apart the Dāsa from the Ārya. I drink of the well-prepared pressing; full in front of me stands the steadfast one made manifest: from all men, O Indra, thou art the higher.
Mantra 20
धन्व च यत् कृन्तत्रं च कति स्वित् ता वि योजना । नेदीयसो वृषाकपेऽस्तमेहि गृहाँ उप विश्वस्मादिन्द्र उत्तरः
The bow, and what cutting-gear there is—how many, pray, are those fastenings to be loosed? Come thou, O Vṛṣākapi, nearer; come home, up to the houses: from all men, O Indra, thou art the higher.
Mantra 21
पुनरेहि वृषाकपे सुविता कल्पयावहै । य एष स्वप्ननंशनोऽस्तमेषि पथा पुनर्विश्वस्मादिन्द्र उत्तरः
Come back again, O Vṛṣākapi; let us set in order safe-going and good success. Thou who art this dispeller of dream and sleep, thou goest home again by the path: from all men, O Indra, thou art the higher.

यदुदञ्चो वृषाकपे गृहमिन्द्राजगन्तन । क्व१स्य पुल्वघो मृगः कमगं जनयोपनो विश्वस्मादिन्द्र उत्तरः
When northward, O Vṛṣākapi, ye twain—O Indra—have come unto the house, where is his dust-stirring beast? To whom went he—toward our women? From all men, O Indra, thou art the higher.

पर्शुर्ह नाम मानवी साकं ससूव विंशतिम्। भद्रं भल त्यस्या अभूद् यस्या उदरमामयद् विश्वस्मादिन्द्र उत्तरः
Parśu by name, a woman of Manu’s race, together bore she twenty. Good fortune, O Bhala, came unto her—she whose belly had been diseased: from all men, O Indra, thou art the higher.
For prosperity and public superiority: it aims to secure food-abundance, strength, and the patron’s precedence, while pushing distress and rivalry away under Indra’s victory-power.
