Sukta 8.78

Devata

Indra

Inside Sukta 78

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

A direct petition to Indra for abundant pressed Soma-delight and radiant ‘herds’ (wealth/light).

  2. Development

Indra’s protective intelligence is emphasized: he is undeceivable and can perceive and restrain mortal wrath and hostile impulses even before they fully arise.

  3. Climax

The hymn’s bold trust: the worshipper entrusts tools and outcomes to Indra, seeking his active participation in human work and success.

  4. Where it settles

A closing blessing for fullness and increase—Indra is asked to complete and fill the harvest, whether new or stored, with shining power.

The deity: Indra

  • In the VedaIndra is celebrated as Maghavan (the bountiful giver), Śūra (hero), the slayer of obstructive powers, and the chief drinker of Soma who answers praise with strength and gifts. He is also depicted as adabdha—undeceivable—who perceives hidden intentions and turns away harm from his worshippers.
  • Cosmic functionHe releases and increases life-power: victories over obstruction, the flow of vitality (often figured as waters/light/cows), and the bestowal of prosperity and protection to the community.
  • Inner significanceIndra represents the awakened will and courageous clarity that breaks inner blockage, converts anger into disciplined power, and secures a ‘harvest’ of growth—material and spiritual—through right effort and divine support.
