Inside Sukta 47

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

The hymn opens by celebrating Soma’s taste and essence, stressing that once Indra drinks it, he becomes unassailable in battles—outer and inner.

  2. Development

Indra’s power is then heard and felt as he subdues and drives beyond adversaries, energizing and urging human clans toward coordinated effort and forward movement.

  3. Climax

A martial-protective surge: prayers intensify for Indra to repel hostile forces and to animate the community’s unified advance, with the war-drum and banner as signs of ordered power.

  4. Where it settles

It closes with a direct petition for victory—Indra blessing the chariot-fighters and ensuring the community’s triumph through unity and momentum.

The deity: Indra

  • In the VedaIndra is the foremost vīra (hero) and śakra (mighty one), invoked as the breaker of obstacles and the champion who becomes unconquerable after drinking Soma. He is portrayed as dynamic, battle-leading, and a protector who drives back hostile forces and rallies the viśaḥ (clans).
  • Cosmic functionHe upholds ṛta by defeating disruptive powers, releasing strength and freedom of movement for the world and for human communities; his Soma-filled vigor renews cosmic and social order through victorious force.
  • Inner significanceIndra represents awakened will, courage, and decisive clarity—Soma symbolizing the intensification of consciousness that makes the inner adversaries (fear, division, inertia) unable to withstand the seeker.

The seer

  • Bharadvāja BārhaspatyaBharadvāja gotra; traditionally linked to the Bārhaspatya (Bṛhaspati-connected) line · A leading poet-seer of the sixth Maṇḍala, renowned for forceful Indra hymns that blend Soma-ecstasy with martial protection and communal victory-prayers.
