Sukta 5.62

Devata

Mitra-Varuṇa (dual); with Sūrya as cosmological locus

Inside Sukta 62

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

The hymn opens by anchoring Mitra–Varuṇa in ṛta itself—truth established by truth—and situates their order in the solar scene where Sūrya releases his horses (RV 5.62.1).

  2. Development

It expands from cosmic regularity to inner and ritual order: inspired insight is ‘followed’ and intelligence is widened, guarded by sacred formulation (yajuṣ) as carefully as the barhis is protected (RV 5.62.5).

  3. Climax

A vision of their supreme, unified excellence appears—‘that One, most excellent among the forms of the gods’—where many powers stand together in ordered harmony (RV 5.62.1).

  4. Where it settles

The hymn ends in a direct plea for the widest, unbroken shelter by which they guard the world, so the worshippers may strive onward and become victors in life (RV 5.62.9).

The deity: Mitra–Varuṇa, with Sūrya as cosmological locus

  • In the VedaMitra and Varuṇa are paired sovereigns who see all, bind and release, and establish truth by truth (ṛtena ṛtam). Their presence is disclosed in the solar order—where Sūrya ‘unyokes/releases his horses’—and in the flawless maintenance of law, oath, and right relationship.
  • Cosmic functionThey sustain ṛta: the regularity of the heavens, the trust that holds society together, and the binding power of vows and contracts; they guard the world as vigilant protectors and ensure that the Sun’s course and the seasons remain stable.
  • Inner significanceMitra represents concord, clarity, and harmonious relation; Varuṇa represents moral depth, restraint, and the inner law that corrects deviation. Together they symbolize integrated conscience—truthfulness aligned with compassionate order—so the mind becomes ‘wide’ (urvī) and protected from rupture.

The seer

  • Vasiṣṭha (Vasiṣṭha family tradition)Vasiṣṭha gotra (Paṅkti/Vasiṣṭha clan of Maṇḍala 7; Vasiṣṭha-family transmission also prominent in Maṇḍala 5) · A foremost ṛṣi associated with royal counsel and the theology of ṛta; renowned for hymns to Varuṇa and for articulating the moral-spiritual dimension of cosmic law.
