Viśvāmitra (traditional for RV 3.1, Agni hymn)

Devata

Agni

Chandas

Triṣṭubh (standard for many Agni hymns in this section; verify by critical meter count)

Inside Sukta 1

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

Agni is addressed as the powerful bearer of Soma’s delight and the fashioned carrier-flame who yokes the rite to bring the gods near and establish peace.

  2. Development

The hymn expands Agni’s identities—priest, warrior, cosmic child—linking ritual fire with cosmic origins (Waters) and with the release of light/wealth (the “cows”).

  3. Climax

Agni’s heroic revelation as the mighty, manly power—“embryo of the Waters”—who lifts up the shining herds and makes hidden abundance manifest.

  4. Where it settles

The seer prays for enduring gains: perpetual winning of the Cow (ray/wealth), harmony, and a victorious son—ending in a request for Agni’s favorable mind toward the worshippers.

The deity: Agni

  • In the VedaAgni is the bright, ever-young fire—household flame and sacrificial priest—who knows the paths, carries offerings, and awakens the gods through his radiance and speech. He is also “apāṃ garbhaḥ,” the embryo of the Waters, and a heroic force who wins and releases the hidden riches (cows/rays).
  • Cosmic functionMediator between human and divine realms: he transforms offerings into subtle form, conveys them to the deities, and sustains ṛta by kindling order, warmth, and life in the worlds.
  • Inner significanceThe awakened will and discerning flame in the heart: aspiration, clarity, and the power that digests experience into insight, turning ritual action into inner transformation.

The seer

  • Viśvāmitra GāthinaGāthin / Kauśika (Viśvāmitra lineage) · A royal-turned-brahmarṣi celebrated for visionary hymns, especially the solar-gāyatrī (RV 3.62.10), and for establishing powerful sacrificial and political-spiritual authority through mantra.
