Sukta 1.113

Rishi

Kutsa Āṅgirasa (traditional ascription for RV 1.113 in many recensions)

Devata

Uṣas (Dawn)

Chandas

Gāyatrī (RV 1.113 is predominantly Gāyatrī)

Inside Sukta 113

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

Dawn arrives as the “light of lights,” born in splendour as Night yields her place and womb to Uṣas.

  2. Development

Uṣas is celebrated as the awakener who sets the world in motion and makes visible the paths of life; the hymn turns reflective, noting that those who saw earlier dawns have passed away while Dawn herself returns.

  3. Climax

The existential insight: human lives move on even as the cosmic rhythm repeats—therefore one must see, strive, and act while the light is present.

  4. Where it settles

A prayer that the wondrous benefits the Dawns bring to the worshipper be magnified and secured by Mitra-Varuṇa and the supporting cosmic powers (Aditi, Sindhu, Earth, Heaven).

The deity: Uṣas

  • In the VedaUṣas is portrayed as the radiant, beautifully adorned dawn who arrives like a young woman, unveiling forms, stirring life, and opening the path for the Sun and the ordered day. She is ‘citra-praketas’—wondrous and clear-discerning—whose coming is the supreme light among lights.
  • Cosmic functionShe marks the daily renewal of ṛta (cosmic order) by turning darkness into visibility, setting beings into motion, and re-establishing the rhythms of sacrifice, labor, and social life.
  • Inner significanceDawn symbolizes awakening—clarity after obscurity, the return of discernment, and the call to begin again with purpose; she also reminds the mind of impermanence and the need to use one’s allotted time well.

The seer

  • Kutsa ĀṅgirasaĀṅgirasa (Angiras lineage; Kutsa as a seer within the Angiras family tradition) · A prominent early ṛṣi associated with dynamic, forward-driving hymns and with the Indra–Kutsa partnership motif found elsewhere in the Rigveda; here he is traditionally credited with a luminous Uṣas-stuti that blends cosmology with existential reflection.

Frequently Asked Questions

Uṣas is the goddess of Dawn, praised as the radiant power that reveals the world, awakens beings, and restores the daily order by replacing Night with light.

Along with celebrating sunrise, the hymn reminds us that human life is brief—many who saw earlier dawns are gone—so we should wake up inwardly and use the present day well.

It is best recited at dawn facing east, with a calm mind; it can accompany a simple morning fire offering or a quiet prayer for clarity, right action, and auspicious results.
