Soma Pavamāna

This Soma Pavamāna hymn praises the self-purifying Soma as he is kindled into radiance and power, moving through the act of purification and awakening the vital energies. It presents Soma as a mighty, delight-giving force whose manifestation alternates like Night and Dawn, and it culminates by inviting the host of deities to the Soma-offering made potent by the svāhā-cry.

Mantra 1

समिद्धो विश्वतस्पतिः पवमानो वि राजति । प्रीणन्वृषा कनिक्रदत् ॥

Kindled into full force, the Lord who holds the many-sided totality shines out as the self-purifying Soma; rejoicing and increasing the inner delight, the Bull-power cries aloud, awakening the energies.

Mantra 2

तनूनपात्पवमानः शृङ्गे शिशानो अर्षति । अन्तरिक्षेण रारजत् ॥

The self-purifying Soma, the ‘Son of the Body’, surges forward sharpening his horned power; he moves in the mid-region and makes it blaze with his shining.

Mantra 3

ईळेन्यः पवमानो रयिर्वि राजति द्युमान् । मधोर्धाराभिरोजसा ॥

Worthy of aspiration, the self-purifying Soma shines out as the plenitude of being, full of luminous mind; by the streams of sweetness he manifests with force.

Mantra 4

बर्हिः प्राचीनमोजसा पवमानः स्तृणन्हरिः । देवेषु देव ईयते ॥

The self-purifying Soma spreads the ancient sacred seat by his force; the golden-green steed of energy is laid out, and the god moves toward the gods—toward the higher powers within.

Mantra 5

उदातैर्जिहते बृहद्द्वारो देवीर्हिरण्ययीः । पवमानेन सुष्टुताः ॥

By the uplifted chants the vast doors—goddesses of golden light—open wide; praised well with the self-purifying Soma, they reveal the passage for the ascent.

Mantra 6

सुशिल्पे बृहती मही पवमानो वृषण्यति । नक्तोषासा न दर्शते ॥

In the well-fashioned Vast and the great Earth of the being, the self-purifying Soma grows mighty in his bull-force; he is seen like Night-and-Dawn—revealing himself in the alternating rhythms of obscurity and light.

Mantra 7

उभा देवा नृचक्षसा होतारा दैव्या हुवे । पवमान इन्द्रो वृषा ॥

I call the two divine Hotars, who see as men and work for the human journey; in the self-purifying Soma stands Indra the Bull—power of victorious force within.

Mantra 8

भारती पवमानस्य सरस्वतीळा मही । इमं नो यज्ञमा गमन्तिस्रो देवीः सुपेशसः ॥

Bhāratī of the purifying Soma, Sarasvatī, and Iḷā the Great—three well-formed goddesses—come to our sacrifice; let these powers of inspired speech and right formation arrive in us.

Mantra 9

त्वष्टारमग्रजां गोपां पुरोयावानमा हुवे । इन्दुरिन्द्रो वृषा हरिः पवमानः प्रजापतिः ॥

I call Tvaṣṭṛ, the first-born guardian, the herdsman and leader in front; for the shining Indu—self-purifying—is Indra the Bull, the tawny force, and Prajāpati, the lord of creation in us.

वनस्पतिं पवमान मध्वा समङ्ग्धि धारया । सहस्रवल्शं हरितं भ्राजमानं हिरण्ययम् ॥

O self-purifying Soma, anoint the Lord of the forest with the stream of sweetness—him of a thousand shoots, tawny and radiant, golden with light; so may the growth of life be filled with delight and made luminous.

Mantra 11

विश्वे देवाः स्वाहाकृतिं पवमानस्या गत । वायुर्बृहस्पतिः सूर्योऽग्निरिन्द्रः सजोषसः ॥

Let all the Gods come to the offering shaped by the inner cry ‘svāhā’ of the purifying Soma. Vāyu, Bṛhaspati, Sūrya, Agni and Indra—may these powers arrive in one accord, harmonised in their working within us.
