Sukta 15

Mantra 1

तम्वभि प्र गायत पुरुहूतं पुरुष्टुतम् । इन्द्रं गीर्भिस्तविषमा विवासत ॥

Sing forth to him with full outpouring—Indra, the much-invoked, the much-praised; with inspired words bring near the mighty force, and make it dwell within you as a power of victory.

Mantra 2

यस्य द्विबर्हसो बृहत्सहो दाधार रोदसी । गिरीँरज्राँ अपः स्वर्वृषत्वना ॥

He whose vast and double-strengthened might upholds the two worlds—he who, by his virile mastery, sets free the firm-held mountains, the waters, and the sunlit radiance: that is Indra’s power of widening Truth.

Mantra 3

स राजसि पुरुष्टुतँ एको वृत्राणि जिघ्नसे । इन्द्र जैत्रा श्रवस्या च यन्तवे ॥

Thou rulest, O much-praised Indra; alone thou strikest down the Vṛtras, the enclosing resistances. Come to us bringing victory and the increasing fame of the soul’s triumph.

Mantra 4

तं ते मदं गृणीमसि वृषणं पृत्सु सासहिम् । उ लोककृत्नुमद्रिवो हरिश्रियम् ॥

We utter thy ecstasy of force—thy bull-like might that conquers in the battles. O wielder of the stone, thou who makest the worlds complete, come in the splendour of the tawny steeds: establish the full order of our inner realms.

Mantra 5

येन ज्योतींष्यायवे मनवे च विवेदिथ । मन्दानो अस्य बर्हिषो वि राजसि ॥

By whom thou didst bring to light the luminous rays for Āyu and for Manu; rejoicing, thou shinest widely upon this sacred seat—making our offering-ground a field of radiance in consciousness.

Mantra 6

तदद्या चित्त उक्थिनोऽनु ष्टुवन्ति पूर्वथा । वृषपत्नीरपो जया दिवेदिवे ॥

Even today the chanters follow and praise thee as of old. Win for us, day by day, the waters that have the Bull for their lord—those streaming powers of life that carry the seed of light.

Mantra 7

तव त्यदिन्द्रियं बृहत्तव शुष्ममुत क्रतुम् । वज्रं शिशाति धिषणा वरेण्यम् ॥

Thine is that vast Indra-power; thine the impetuous force and the will of right intelligence. The discerning inspiration sharpens thy desirable thunderbolt—making the soul’s weapon keen for the cleaving of darkness.

Mantra 8

तव द्यौरिन्द्र पौंस्यं पृथिवी वर्धति श्रवः । त्वामापः पर्वतासश्च हिन्विरे ॥

Heaven, O Indra, and Earth increase thy manly might and thy radiant renown; the waters and the mountains urge thee on—so that the whole being supports the soul’s victorious advance.

Mantra 9

त्वां विष्णुर्बृहन्क्षयो मित्रो गृणाति वरुणः । त्वां शर्धो मदत्यनु मारुतम् ॥

Vast-abiding Vishnu, Mitra and Varuna acclaim you; and the Marut-host follows you in rapture—so may these powers confirm in us the wide Truth and the harmonious right order.

Mantra 10

त्वं वृषा जनानां मंहिष्ठ इन्द्र जज्ञिषे । सत्रा विश्वा स्वपत्यानि दधिषे ॥

You are the Bull-force of the peoples, the most bountiful; O Indra, you are born for this work: you hold in a constant way all powers of good begetting and right progeny—every true increase of our being.

Mantra 11

सत्रा त्वं पुरुष्टुतँ एको वृत्राणि तोशसे । नान्य इन्द्रात्करणं भूय इन्वति ॥

Ever you alone—O much-praised Indra—overpower the Vṛtras, the obstructing powers. None other than Indra can drive the effective action further on toward victory.

Mantra 12

यदिन्द्र मन्मशस्त्वा नाना हवन्त ऊतये । अस्माकेभिर्नृभिरत्रा स्वर्जय ॥

When, O Indra, the hearts of men call you in many ways for help, then with our heroic seekers here win the Sun-world—win the light of the Truth for us.

Mantra 13

अरं क्षयाय नो महे विश्वा रूपाण्याविशन् । इन्द्रं जैत्राय हर्षया शचीपतिम् ॥

Sufficient for our great increase and dwelling, may all forms of power enter into us; make Indra glad for victory—Indra, lord of the effective Shacī, master of the right force of accomplishment.
