Sukta 7.94
Vasiṣṭha (Mandala 7 attribution)
Indrāgnī
Gāyatrī (probable: shorter 3-pāda structure typical of gāyatrī in some Indrāgnī hymns)
This hymn to Indra-and-Agni presents the praise as an “ancient” inspiration arising like rain from a cloud, then turns that inspired speech into a practical invocation for protection and victory. It repeatedly asks the paired powers—force (Indra) and sacred fire (Agni)—to come with help, secure the worshippers among the peoples, and to strike down hostile speech, evil intent, and rakṣasic obstruction.
Mantra 1
This praise is born from the mind’s deep intention, O Indra-and-Agni, an ancient kind of hymn; it has arisen like rain from a cloud—an outpouring from the gathered fullness into the seeking field.
Mantra 2
Hear the call of the singer, O Indra-and-Agni; accept and incline to the words. As masters of power, make the thoughts swell—fill the intelligence with increase.
Mantra 3
O Indra-and-Agni, O strong ones, do not give us over to downfall, nor to hostile accusation; do not let us be harmed by blame—guard our path from distortion.
Mantra 4
To Indra and to Agni we offer the vast reverence; we set in motion a well-wrought utterance. With inspired intelligence, as milk-cows of abundance, we seek your help and fostering.
Mantra 5
For these two the seers ever adore in this way for help—pressing through all obstacles—for the winning of plenitudes of force and victory.
Mantra 6
You two we call with inspired utterances—those who can awaken the soul—bringing our offering-impulse; seekers of gain, may we win by luminous intelligence.
Mantra 7
O Indra and Agni, come to us with your protecting help, you who prevail for the peoples; let not the hostile ill-will gain mastery over us.
Mantra 8
Let not the deceitful assault of any raging mortal strike us down; O Indra and Agni, grant us your sheltering peace.
Mantra 9
That wealth of yours we seek—rich in rays of Light and rich in golden fullness, rich in steed-force; O Indra and Agni, may we win that plenitude.
Mantra 10
When Soma is pressed and poured, the men call Indra and Agni again and again, with the sevenfold energies, in acts of devoted service.
Mantra 11
With hymns they strengthen the most Vṛtra-slaying powers; even intoxicated with the delight, with voice and fervor they continually seek to make them present.
Mantra 12
Those two indeed—strike down the mortal of evil intent, the ill-knower, the Rakṣasa-possessed; smite the devouring grasp with your jaw-force, smite the engulfing abyss with your jaw-force.
Indrāgnī means Indra and Agni invoked as a single paired power—Indra’s strength and Agni’s sacrificial fire working together to protect and empower the worshipper.
It asks Indrāgnī to come with help, protect the people from hostile speech and ill-will, and destroy forces that obstruct the rite or harm the community.
The image suggests that true praise is a gathered fullness that naturally pours out—an inspired utterance that nourishes and makes divine help ‘arrive’ like rain sustaining life.
