Sukta 53

Mantra 1

वयमु त्वा पथस्पते रथं न वाजसातये । धिये पूषन्नयुज्महि ॥

We yoke you, O Lord of the Path, like a chariot for the winning of plenitude; O Pūṣan, we harness you to our thought so that the journey of consciousness may arrive.

Mantra 2

अभि नो नर्यं वसु वीरं प्रयतदक्षिणम् । वामं गृहपतिं नय ॥

Lead toward us the manly treasure—heroic, bearing the rightly ordered power of accomplishment; lead the dear lord of the home, the force that establishes our inner dwelling in peace.

Mantra 3

अदित्सन्तं चिदाघृणे पूषन्दानाय चोदय । पणेश्चिद्वि म्रदा मनः ॥

O Pūṣan of kindly light, impel even the unwilling toward giving; and even in the trafficker’s heart break open the knot—soften and turn it toward generosity.

Mantra 4

वि पथो वाजसातये चिनुहि वि मृधो जहि । साधन्तामुग्र नो धियः ॥

Open out the paths for the winning of plenitude; strike away the hostile resistances. O strong one, let our inspired thoughts accomplish their work.

Mantra 5

परि तृन्धि पणीनामारया हृदया कवे । अथेमस्मभ्यं रन्धय ॥

O Seer-Pūṣan, with the inner spear of discerning will, cut all around the hoarders (Paṇis) from the heart’s domain; then make their withheld plenitude yield to us.

Mantra 6

वि पूषन्नारया तुद पणेरिच्छ हृदि प्रियम् । अथेमस्मभ्यं रन्धय ॥

O Pūṣan, strike apart with the piercing point; seek out in the Paṇi’s heart what is dear (the hidden delight and light). Then make it come under our right possession.

Mantra 7

आ रिख किकिरा कृणु पणीनां हृदया कवे । अथेमस्मभ्यं रन्धय ॥

O Seer-Pūṣan, dig into (their concealment); make the Paṇis’ heart a broken, rattling thing—then compel what they hold to yield to us.

Mantra 8

यां पूषन्ब्रह्मचोदनीमारां बिभर्ष्याघृणे । तया समस्य हृदयमा रिख किकिरा कृणु ॥

That spear-point which you bear, O Pūṣan, impelled by the Word (brahman) and moved by luminous ardour—by it dig into and shatter the heart of the one who is crooked and compressed (the obstructer).

Mantra 9

या ते अष्ट्रा गोपशाघृणे पशुसाधनी । तस्यास्ते सुम्नमीमहे ॥

That goad of yours, O radiant Pūṣan, which guards the herds and accomplishes the gaining of living powers—of that we seek your grace and happy protection.

Mantra 10

उत नो गोषणिं धियमश्वसां वाजसामुत । नृवत्कृणुहि वीतये ॥

And make for us a thought that wins the cows—also one that wins the horses and the plenitudes of force; make it manful and effective for our receiving and enjoyment.
