Aśvinau (Nā́satyā)

This hymn is Atri’s urgent dawn-invocation to the Aśvins (Nā́satyā), asking the swift twin healers to hear his call and arrive with protective help and prosperity. It emphasizes their stable, ever-ready presence, their responsiveness to praise, and the tangible “pouring” of boons—strength, enjoyment, support—when they accept the summons.
Mantra 1
कूष्ठो देवावश्विनाद्या दिवो मनावसू । तच्छ्रवथो वृषण्वसू अत्रिर्वामा विवासति ॥
Firm is the station of you two divine Aśvins today—O you who are treasures of the luminous mind from heaven. Hear that call, O mighty bringers of force: Atri kindles worship towards you.
Mantra 2
कुह त्या कुह नु श्रुता दिवि देवा नासत्या । कस्मिन्ना यतथो जने को वां नदीनां सचा ॥
Where are you two, where now are you heard of, O divine Nāsatyas, in heaven? To which people do you move? Who keeps company with you along the flowing currents (of life and consciousness)?
Mantra 3
कं याथः कं ह गच्छथः कमच्छा युञ्जाथे रथम् । कस्य ब्रह्माणि रण्यथो वयं वामुश्मसीष्टये ॥
To whom do you go, to whom indeed do you travel; towards whom do you yoke your chariot? In whose mantras do you take delight? We long for you two for the fulfilment of the sacrifice and the inner offering.
Mantra 4
पौरं चिद्ध्युदप्रुतं पौर पौराय जिन्वथः । यदीं गृभीततातये सिंहमिव द्रुहस्पदे ॥
Even one who is of the city (bound to the common outer life), though sunk in the flood, you strengthen for his fellow-citizen. When he is seized for hostile assault, you free him like a lion from the footing of the deceiver.
Mantra 5
प्र च्यवानाज्जुजुरुषो वव्रिमत्कं न मुञ्चथः । युवा यदी कृथः पुनरा काममृण्वे वध्वः ॥
From Cyavāna, worn with age, you did not loose the enclosing skin as one sheds a garment; rather, when you made him young again, the bride’s desire was fulfilled anew.
Mantra 6
अस्ति हि वामिह स्तोता स्मसि वां संदृशि श्रिये । नू श्रुतं म आ गतमवोभिर्वाजिनीवसू ॥
Here indeed you have a praiser; we are yours for the vision and the splendour. Now, having heard (our call), come to me with your helps, O lords of the plenitude of force.
Mantra 7
को वामद्य पुरूणामा वव्ने मर्त्यानाम् । को विप्रो विप्रवाहसा को यज्ञैर्वाजिनीवसू ॥
Who among the many mortals has won you today? Which inspired one has drawn you, O carriers of inspired power? Who by sacrifices has claimed you, O lords of the plenitude of force?
Mantra 8
आ वां रथो रथानां येष्ठो यात्वश्विना । पुरू चिदस्मयुस्तिर आङ्गूषो मर्त्येष्वा ॥
Let your chariot, the foremost among chariots, come here, O Aśvins. Let the many-voiced hymn, seeking you, cross over and arrive among mortals.
Mantra 9
शमू षु वां मधूयुवास्माकमस्तु चर्कृतिः । अर्वाचीना विचेतसा विभिः श्येनेव दीयतम् ॥
O Aśvins, you who are youthful with the honeyed delight, may your active help be for our peace and wholeness. Turning towards us with your wide discernment, come swiftly with your powers, like a falcon’s sure descent.
Mantra 10
अश्विना यद्ध कर्हि चिच्छुश्रूयातमिमं हवम् । वस्वीरू षु वां भुजः पृञ्चन्ति सु वां पृचः ॥
O Aśvins, whenever you truly hear this call of ours, then your rich enjoyments and your fulfilling powers pour in abundance; your supports mingle with us for our increase.
The hymn praises the Aśvinau (Nā́satyā), the divine twin healers and rescuers who are especially invoked at dawn.
He asks them to hear his invocation and come quickly with protective help—bringing strength, wellbeing, supportive power, and prosperity for increase.
It is best suited to dawn worship and early-morning rites, when the Aśvins are traditionally invited to arrive and bless the sacrificer with renewal and aid.
