This hymn is an urgent Soma-invitation to Indra: his tawny steeds are called to the chariot, and he is asked to come swiftly and drink the pressed Soma set out on the barhis. The poet praises Indra as the most manly winner of spoils who smashes Vṛtra-like obstructions, and petitions him for victory, protection in contests, and the gathering of wealth.
Mantra 1
तिष्ठा हरी रथ आ युज्यमाना याहि वायुर्न नियुतो नो अच्छ । पिबास्यन्धो अभिसृष्टो अस्मे इन्द्र स्वाहा ररिमा ते मदाय ॥
Stand firm, O two tawny ones, yoked to the chariot; come to us like Vāyu with his teams. Drink the soma-essence pressed out for us; Indra, svāhā—this we give to thee for thy delight and ecstasy of power.
Mantra 2
उपाजिरा पुरुहूताय सप्ती हरी रथस्य धूर्ष्वा युनज्मि । द्रवद्यथा सम्भृतं विश्वतश्चिदुपेमं यज्ञमा वहात इन्द्रम् ॥
Near, swift, for the much-invoked—these two bay steeds I yoke to the chariot-poles. Running as to a gathering prepared from all sides, bring Indra here to this sacrifice.
Mantra 3
उपो नयस्व वृषणा तपुष्पोतेमव त्वं वृषभ स्वधावः । ग्रसेतामश्वा वि मुचेह शोणा दिवेदिवे सदृशीरद्धि धानाः ॥
Lead us near, O two strong ones, drinkers of the heat-force; and thou too, O Bull, protect—self-powered. Let the horses graze; unyoke here the ruddy pair. Day by day eat the grains that answer to thee.
Mantra 4
ब्रह्मणा ते ब्रह्मयुजा युनज्मि हरी सखाया सधमाद आशू । स्थिरं रथं सुखमिन्द्राधितिष्ठन्प्रजानन्विद्वाँ उप याहि सोमम् ॥
By the power of the mantric insight (brahman) I yoke for you the two tawny steeds, joined by the sacred Word, swift comrades for the common ecstasy. Mount firmly the stable and happy chariot, O Indra; knowing and discerning, come near to the Soma-delight.
Mantra 5
मा ते हरी वृषणा वीतपृष्ठा नि रीरमन्यजमानासो अन्ये । अत्यायाहि शश्वतो वयं तेऽरं सुतेभिः कृणवाम सोमैः ॥
Let not other sacrificers detain your two mighty tawny ones, broad-backed in their going. Overpass them and come continually to us; for you we make ready the right plenty with the pressed Soma-delights.
Mantra 6
तवायं सोमस्त्वमेह्यर्वाङ्छश्वत्तमं सुमना अस्य पाहि । अस्मिन्यज्ञे बर्हिष्या निषद्या दधिष्वेमं जठर इन्दुमिन्द्र ॥
This Soma is yours; come here towards us, ever and again, with a glad mind, and drink of it. In this sacrifice, taking your seat on the sacred seat of offering, place this drop of light (indu) within your belly, O Indra.
Mantra 7
स्तीर्णं ते बर्हिः सुत इन्द्र सोमः कृता धाना अत्तवे ते हरिभ्याम् । तदोकसे पुरुशाकाय वृष्णे मरुत्वते तुभ्यं राता हवींषि ॥
For you the sacred spread is laid out; the Soma is pressed, O Indra; the grains are prepared for your two tawny powers to partake. To you, dwelling in that home of consciousness, O strong one of many powers, joined with the Maruts, these offerings are given.
Mantra 8
इमं नरः पर्वतास्तुभ्यमापः समिन्द्र गोभिर्मधुमन्तमक्रन् । तस्यागत्या सुमना ऋष्व पाहि प्रजानन्विद्वान्पथ्या अनु स्वाः ॥
This (Soma) the strong ones, the mountains and the waters, have together made for you, O Indra, honeyed with the rays/cows. Coming to it with a glad mind, drink, O lofty one; knowing, follow the right paths that are your own.
Mantra 9
याँ आभजो मरुत इन्द्र सोमे ये त्वामवर्धन्नभवन्गणस्ते । तेभिरेतं सजोषा वावशानोऽग्नेः पिब जिह्वया सोममिन्द्र ॥
Those Maruts whom you have shared with in the Soma, O Indra—who increased you and became your host—together with them, in one accord and eager, drink this Soma with Agni’s tongue, O Indra.
Mantra 10
इन्द्र पिब स्वधया चित्सुतस्याग्नेर्वा पाहि जिह्वया यजत्र । अध्वर्योर्वा प्रयतं शक्र हस्ताद्धोतुर्वा यज्ञं हविषो जुषस्व ॥
O Indra, drink the pressed Soma by your own right power; or drink it with Agni’s tongue, O adorable. Or accept, O Shakra, what the Adhvaryu has set forth from his hand; or from the Hotṛ receive the sacrifice and enjoy the offering.
Mantra 11
शुनं हुवेम मघवानमिन्द्रमस्मिन्भरे नृतमं वाजसातौ । शृण्वन्तमुग्रमूतये समत्सु घ्नन्तं वृत्राणि संजितं धनानाम् ॥
For our well-being we call the bounteous Indra in this bearing of the struggle, the most manly in the winning of plenitude. Hearing us, fierce for our help in the battles, slaying the obstructers, the conqueror who gathers the riches (of the being).
It invites Indra to the Soma sacrifice, asks him to drink the pressed Soma, and requests his help for victory, protection in conflicts, and prosperity.
The tawny steeds (harī) are a standard sign of Indra’s swift arrival; calling them emphasizes speed, readiness, and the god’s immediate response to the ritual summons.
On the outer level it refers to Indra defeating hostile powers that block success; inwardly it symbolizes breaking inner resistance—fear, inertia, and limitation—so strength and clarity can flow.
