This hymn is an urgent invitation to Indra—"much-invoked" and borne by the tawny steeds—to come swiftly to the yajña and drink the freshly pressed Soma. It praises Indra as the hearer of prayer, the knower of the rite’s path, and the victorious slayer of obstructing powers (vṛtra-like resistances), sought for aid in struggle and for the winning of wealth, strength, and plenitude.

Mantra 1

असावि सोमः पुरुहूत तुभ्यं हरिभ्यां यज्ञमुप याहि तूयम् । तुभ्यं गिरो विप्रवीरा इयाना दधन्विर इन्द्र पिबा सुतस्य ॥

The Soma has been pressed for thee, O much-invoked Indra; come swiftly to the offering with thy tawny powers. For thee the inspired words, rich in seer-force, move forward and are set in place; O Indra, drink of the pressed delight—enter the human vessel and enlarge the luminous might.

Mantra 2

अप्सु धूतस्य हरिवः पिबेह नृभिः सुतस्य जठरं पृणस्व । मिमिक्षुर्यमद्रय इन्द्र तुभ्यं तेभिर्वर्धस्व मदमुक्थवाहः ॥

Drink here, O Hari-possessor, of the pressed Soma clarified in the waters; with the pressing-men fill thy belly with the delight. The stones have mingled it for thee; by them increase thy ecstasy, O bearer of the inspired word—so the inner speech may ride upon thy force.

प्रोग्रां पीतिं वृष्ण इयर्मि सत्यां प्रयै सुतस्य हर्यश्व तुभ्यम् । इन्द्र धेनाभिरिह मादयस्व धीभिर्विश्वाभिः शच्या गृणानः ॥

I set in motion the strong and true drinking for the Bull; for thee, O Indra of tawny steeds, for the forward course of the pressed delight. O Indra, rejoice here with the streams of richness and with all the thoughts—praised with thy effective power—so the right action may become luminous and victorious.

Mantra 4

ऊती शचीवस्तव वीर्येण वयो दधाना उशिज ऋतज्ञाः । प्रजावदिन्द्र मनुषो दुरोणे तस्थुर्गृणन्तः सधमाद्यासः ॥

By thy help, O master of effective power, bearing strength through thy hero-force, the eager ones who know the Right stand in the human dwelling rich with offspring (creative increase). They have taken their station praising, companions in the shared gladness—so the ordered Truth may be established in the house of man.

Mantra 5

प्रणीतिभिष्टे हर्यश्व सुष्टोः सुषुम्नस्य पुरुरुचो जनासः । मंहिष्ठामूतिं वितिरे दधाना स्तोतार इन्द्र तव सूनृताभिः ॥

Led by thy guidances, O Indra of tawny steeds, men of shining force, well-praising, seeking thy happy benevolence, extend and establish the most abundant help. Thy affirming true words (sūnṛtā) become their support—so the soul’s speech grows straight and effective.

उप ब्रह्माणि हरिवो हरिभ्यां सोमस्य याहि पीतये सुतस्य । इन्द्र त्वा यज्ञः क्षममाणमानड्दाश्वाँ अस्यध्वरस्य प्रकेतः ॥

Come near to the sacred formulations, O Hari-possessor, with thy tawny powers; come to drink the pressed Soma. O Indra, the sacrifice calls to thee as one who bears with us and endures; thou art the giver, the clear knower of this journey of offering—make the inner rite luminous and sure.

Mantra 7

सहस्रवाजमभिमातिषाहं सुतेरणं मघवानं सुवृक्तिम् । उप भूषन्ति गिरो अप्रतीतमिन्द्रं नमस्या जरितुः पनन्त ॥

The hymns adorn and approach Indra—winner of a thousand plenitudes, conqueror of hostile assaults, delighting in the pressed Soma, the bounteous lord of a well-shaped word. To that irresistible one the singer’s acts of reverence go forth—so the inner speech becomes beautiful and the adversaries are overpassed.

Mantra 8

सप्तापो देवीः सुरणा अमृक्ता याभिः सिन्धुमतर इन्द्र पूर्भित् । नवतिं स्रोत्या नव च स्रवन्तीर्देवेभ्यो गातुं मनुषे च विन्दः ॥

O Indra, breaker of closed strongholds, by those seven divine Waters—noble in their flow and unmixed—you didst cross the oceanic flood. Thou didst find the path of passage for the gods and also for man: the ninety streams and the nine that pour and run.

अपो महीरभिशस्तेरमुञ्चोऽजागरास्वधि देव एकः । इन्द्र यास्त्वं वृत्रतूर्ये चकर्थ ताभिर्विश्वायुस्तन्वं पुपुष्याः ॥

Thou didst release the great Waters from the oppression; the one God stood wakeful over them. O Indra, the Waters by which thou didst act in the Vṛtra-battle—by those mayst thou nourish thy body of universal life.

Mantra 10

वीरेण्यः क्रतुरिन्द्रः सुशस्तिरुतापि धेना पुरुहूतमीट्टे । आर्दयद्वृत्रमकृणोदु लोकं ससाहे शक्रः पृतना अभिष्टिः ॥

Indra, the heroic Will, the well-praised, is invoked; even the nourishing Cow of plenitude hymns the much-called. He crushed Vṛtra; he made the wide world-room. The Mighty One, the victorious onset, overcame the battles.

Mantra 11

शुनं हुवेम मघवानमिन्द्रमस्मिन्भरे नृतमं वाजसातौ । शृण्वन्तमुग्रमूतये समत्सु घ्नन्तं वृत्राणि संजितं धनानाम् ॥

For our good fortune we call Indra the bounteous, the most manful in this bearing of the load, in the winning of plenitude. Hearing us, fierce for help in the clashes, slaying the obstructions, the conqueror who gathers the riches of being.
