RV 1.3 is an early Gāyatrī hymn of invitation and welcome, calling the Aśvins—swift twin gods of dawn and rescue—to the sacrifice to accept the offered oblations and bring strength, joy, and abundance. The hymn expands the invocation to the Viśve Devāḥ (All the Gods) and culminates in a luminous affirmation of Sarasvatī as the awakener of inspired thought (dhī), so that the rite becomes both an outer offering and an inner awakening of clarity.

Mantra 1

अश्विना यज्वरीरिषो द्रवत्पाणी शुभस्पती । पुरुभुजा चनस्यतम् ॥

O Ashvins, you who come with swift hands, lords of the luminous delight: accept and foster these offerings of the striving soul; you who are wide in enjoyment, become pleased with us and increase our plenitude of force.

Mantra 2

अश्विना पुरुदंससा नरा शवीरया धिया । धिष्ण्या वनतं गिरः ॥

O Ashvins, you two heroic powers of many effective workings, come with the strong and luminous intelligence; you who are firmly established in the right action, incline towards (accept) our inspired utterances.

Mantra 3

दस्रा युवाकवः सुता नासत्या वृक्तबर्हिषः । आ यातं रुद्रवर्तनी ॥

O two Wonder-Workers, youthful in your power, O Nāsatyas—when the Soma has been pressed and the seat of offering is made ready—come to us; travel here on the paths of the Rudra-force, that impels and clears the way within.

Mantra 4

इन्द्रा याहि चित्रभानो सुता इमे त्वायवः । अण्वीभिस्तना पूतासः ॥

O Indra, come—O bright-flaming power of many lights. These Soma-pressings are for you, purified in their whole substance through the fine strainers, ready for your intake of force.

Mantra 5

इन्द्रा याहि धियेषितो विप्रजूतः सुतावतः । उप ब्रह्माणि वाघतः ॥

O Indra, come—impelled by the illumined thought, urged on by the seer’s inspiration—to the one who has pressed the Soma; come near to the man of aspiration and his mantras, that the Force of truth may enter and act in us.

Mantra 6

इन्द्रा याहि तूतुजान उप ब्रह्माणि हरिवः । सुते दधिष्व नश्चनः ॥

O Indra, come here—swiftly urged onward—towards our mantras of light, O Lord of the tawny steeds; in the pressed Soma establish in us even a particle of your delighting power and victorious fullness.

Mantra 7

ओमासश्चर्षणीधृतो विश्वे देवास आ गत । दाश्वांसो दाशुषः सुतम् ॥

O all you divine powers, upholders of the human worlds, come here with your swift plenitudes; for the giver who offers, there is the pressed Soma—may you drink and strengthen the inner sacrifice.

Mantra 8

विश्वे देवासो अप्तुरः सुतमा गन्त तूर्णयः । उस्रा इव स्वसराणि ॥

O All-Gods, swift in the work of the Waters (the flowing energies), come quickly to the pressed Soma—like the radiant dawn-cows (rays) that move as sisters in one harmony of light.

Mantra 9

विश्वे देवासो अस्रिध एहिमायासो अद्रुहः । मेधं जुषन्त वह्नयः ॥

May all the divine Powers—unfailing, swift in their arriving force, and without hostility—take delight in the sacrifice of understanding; may the bearers of the flame accept and foster our inspired offering within us.

Mantra 10

पावका नः सरस्वती वाजेभिर्वाजिनीवती । यज्ञं वष्टु धियावसुः ॥

May Sarasvatī, the purifying Power, rich in the plenitudes of force and victorious energies, shape and foster for us the sacrifice—she whose wealth is the illumined thought.

Mantra 11

चोदयित्री सूनृतानां चेतन्ती सुमतीनाम् । यज्ञं दधे सरस्वती ॥

Sarasvatī, the impeller of the true and luminous word and the awakener of the right-minded inspirations, establishes the inner sacrifice (the consecrated offering of our being).

Mantra 12

महो अर्णः सरस्वती प्र चेतयति केतुना । धियो विश्वा वि राजति ॥

Sarasvatī, the vast flood of luminous plenitude, awakens (in us) by her banner of discernment; and all the inspired thoughts shine out in their full radiance.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Aśvins are twin Vedic gods known for swift arrival, healing, rescue, and bringing auspicious dawn-like brightness. In this hymn they are invited to accept offerings and increase the worshiper’s strength and well-being.

The hymn widens the invitation from the Aśvins to the entire divine assembly, asking all powers to come to the sacrifice and partake of the pressed Soma, supporting the rite and the human world.

Sarasvatī appears as the inspirer of insight: she awakens discernment (ketu) and makes inspired thoughts (dhī) shine. This shows the sacrifice aims not only at outer blessings but also inner clarity and illumination.
