Sukta 180

Mantra 1

युवो रजांसि सुयमासो अश्वा रथो यद्वां पर्यर्णांसि दीयत् । हिरण्यया वां पवयः प्रुषायन्मध्वः पिबन्ता उषसः सचेथे ॥

Your well-guided horses traverse the worlds when your chariot moves around the flowing currents. Golden are your fellies, sprinkling brightness; drinking the honeyed delight, you two keep company with the Dawn.

Mantra 2

युवमत्यस्याव नक्षथो यद्विपत्मनो नर्यस्य प्रयज्योः । स्वसा यद्वां विश्वगूर्ती भराति वाजायेट्टे मधुपाविषे च ॥

You two protected Atya when the swift-moving, manly one was to be offered forth. When your sister Viśvagūrtī brings (the offering), she invokes you for the plenitude of force and for increase, O drinkers of honey.

Mantra 3

युवं पय उस्रियायामधत्तं पक्वमामायामव पूर्व्यं गोः । अन्तर्यद्वनिनो वामृतप्सू ह्वारो न शुचिर्यजते हविष्मान् ॥

You two set the nourishing essence into the radiant seeker; you brought down the ancient Light (the Cow) from the raw, unripe condition into ripeness. When the desiring powers within are held in the streams of Truth, then the pure one—like a bright kindler—offers the oblation from within.

Mantra 4

युवं ह घर्मं मधुमन्तमत्रयेऽपो न क्षोदोऽवृणीतमेषे । तद्वां नरावश्विना पश्वइष्टी रथ्येव चक्रा प्रति यन्ति मध्वः ॥

You two indeed chose for Atri the honeyed Gharma, as waters choose their flowing surge. Therefore, O men, O Ashvins, the offerings that seek increase come back to you with sweetness, like wheels returning along the chariot-path.

Mantra 5

आ वां दानाय ववृतीय दस्रा गोरोहेण तौग्र्यो न जिव्रिः । अपः क्षोणी सचते माहिना वां जूर्णो वामक्षुरंहसो यजत्रा ॥

Toward your giving I turn, O wondrous ones, drawn by the uplifting of the Light, like a swift Taugrya. The waters and the wide earth join with your greatness; by you the pressing force is sharpened against distress, O worthy of sacrifice.

Mantra 6

नि यद्युवेथे नियुतः सुदानू उप स्वधाभिः सृजथः पुरंधिम् । प्रेषद्वेषद्वातो न सूरिरा महे ददे सुव्रतो न वाजम् ॥

When you two yoke yourselves with your teams, O givers of good gifts, you release the fullness of abundance by your own innate powers. Like the wind that drives and urges, the illumined giver bestows for the great aim, establishing the plenitude of force by a right law of action.

Mantra 7

वयं चिद्धि वां जरितारः सत्या विपन्यामहे वि पणिर्हितावान् । अधा चिद्धि ष्माश्विनावनिन्द्या पाथो हि ष्मा वृषणावन्तिदेवम् ॥

We too are your true praisers; we seek to express you in inspired speech, even though the trafficker of gain would hide the treasure. Yet indeed, O faultless Ashvins, you are the path; for you two, mighty ones, lead toward the divine near-ness.

Mantra 8

युवां चिद्धि ष्माश्विनावनु द्यून्विरुद्रस्य प्रस्रवणस्य सातौ । अगस्त्यो नरां नृषु प्रशस्तः काराधुनीव चितयत्सहस्रैः ॥

You two, O Ashvins, are followed through the days in the winning of the strong-flowing stream. Like Agastya, praised among men, one awakens the inner hearing and discernment, as a sounding channel stirs with a thousand currents.

Mantra 9

प्र यद्वहेथे महिना रथस्य प्र स्यन्द्रा याथो मनुषो न होता । धत्तं सूरिभ्य उत वा स्वश्व्यं नासत्या रयिषाचः स्याम ॥

When you drive forth by the greatness of your chariot and travel swiftly like the human priest, then place for the illumined leaders—and for us—the right horse-power of energy. O Nāsatyas, may we be those who cleave to spiritual plenitude.

Mantra 10

तं वां रथं वयमद्या हुवेम स्तोमैरश्विना सुविताय नव्यम् । अरिष्टनेमिं परि द्यामियानं विद्यामेषं वृजनं जीरदानुम् ॥

That chariot of yours we call today with hymns, O Ashvins, for a new and widening good passage. With unbroken wheels, moving around heaven, may we find the impulsion and the victorious opening, and the swift-giving flow of your grace.
