Sukta 114

Mantra 1

इमा रुद्राय तवसे कपर्दिने क्षयद्वीराय प्र भरामहे मतीः । यथा शमसद्द्विपदे चतुष्पदे विश्वं पुष्टं ग्रामे अस्मिन्ननातुरम् ॥

These thought-offerings we bear forth to Rudra, the mighty, the tress-bearing, the lord of a dwelling rich in soul-force, so that peace may be for the two-footed and the four-footed; that all nourishment in this settlement may be whole and without affliction.

Mantra 2

मृळा नो रुद्रोत नो मयस्कृधि क्षयद्वीराय नमसा विधेम ते । यच्छं च योश्च मनुरायेजे पिता तदश्याम तव रुद्र प्रणीतिषु ॥

Be gracious to us, O Rudra; and make for us a gladness. To the lord of a hero-strong dwelling we do service with obeisance. The peace and the well-being that our father Manu sought by sacrifice—may we attain that in thy guidances, O Rudra.

Mantra 3

अश्याम ते सुमतिं देवयज्यया क्षयद्वीरस्य तव रुद्र मीढ्वः । सुम्नायन्निद्विशो अस्माकमा चरारिष्टवीरा जुहवाम ते हविः ॥

May we attain thy good-will through the godward sacrifice, O Rudra, bountiful lord of a hero-strong dwelling. Seeking thy grace, come indeed to our clans; uninjured in soul-force, we would invoke thee with our offering.

Mantra 4

त्वेषं वयं रुद्रं यज्ञसाधं वङ्कुं कविमवसे नि ह्वयामहे । आरे अस्मद्दैव्यं हेळो अस्यतु सुमतिमिद्वयमस्या वृणीमहे ॥

We call inward for help upon Rudra, the intense Force, accomplisher of the sacrifice, the inward-bending Seer. Far from us may his divine wrath be cast away; it is his luminous goodwill alone that we choose and receive into our being.

Mantra 5

दिवो वराहमरुषं कपर्दिनं त्वेषं रूपं नमसा नि ह्वयामहे । हस्ते बिभ्रद्भेषजा वार्याणि शर्म वर्म च्छर्दिरस्मभ्यं यंसत् ॥

With obeisance we invoke the blazing form—Rudra of heaven, the ruddy boar, the matted-haired—who bears in his hand the choicest healings; may he grant to us shelter, armour, and a covering of protection.

Mantra 6

इदं पित्रे मरुतामुच्यते वचः स्वादोः स्वादीयो रुद्राय वर्धनम् । रास्वा च नो अमृत मर्तभोजनं त्मने तोकाय तनयाय मृळ ॥

This word is spoken to the Father of the Maruts, sweeter than sweetness, a strengthening for Rudra. O Immortal, give us also the nourishment that mortals can receive; be gracious to our self, to our child-soul, to our growing lineage of becoming.

Mantra 7

मा नो महान्तमुत मा नो अर्भकं मा न उक्षन्तमुत मा न उक्षितम् । मा नो वधीः पितरं मोत मातरं मा नः प्रियास्तन्वो रुद्र रीरिषः ॥

Do not strike down our greater strength, nor our small beginnings; do not smite what is growing, nor what has grown. Do not slay our father, nor our mother; do not wound our dear bodies, O Rudra.

Mantra 8

मा नस्तोके तनये मा न आयौ मा नो गोषु मा नो अश्वेषु रीरिषः । वीरान्मा नो रुद्र भामितो वधीर्हविष्मन्तः सदमित्त्वा हवामहे ॥

Do not harm us in our child and our offspring, nor in our life-force; do not harm us in our rays of Light and in our powers of swift movement. Do not slay our heroes, O Rudra, even when angered; we who bear the offering call you always.

Mantra 9

उप ते स्तोमान्पशुपा इवाकरं रास्वा पितर्मरुतां सुम्नमस्मे । भद्रा हि ते सुमतिर्मृळयत्तमाथा वयमव इत्ते वृणीमहे ॥

To you I have brought my hymns, as one brings the herd to its keeper. O Father of the Maruts, grant to us your blissful favour; for your goodwill is indeed auspicious and most full of mercy. Therefore it is your protection alone that we choose.

Mantra 10

आरे ते गोघ्नमुत पूरुषघ्नं क्षयद्वीर सुम्नमस्मे ते अस्तु । मृळा च नो अधि च ब्रूहि देवाधा च नः शर्म यच्छ द्विबर्हाः ॥

Far from you be the slaying of our light-richness and the slaying of our human strength; O giver of abiding heroism, let your favour be with us. Be gracious to us and speak to us from above, O god; and then grant us peace and shelter, O you of double support.

Mantra 11

अवोचाम नमो अस्मा अवस्यवः शृणोतु नो हवं रुद्रो मरुत्वान् । तन्नो मित्रो वरुणो मामहन्तामदितिः सिन्धुः पृथिवी उत द्यौः ॥

We have spoken our homage to him, we who seek protection; may Rudra with the Maruts hear our call. May Mitra and Varuṇa magnify that for us; and Aditi, Sindhu, Earth and Heaven likewise uphold it.
