Sukta 1.108
Indra-Agni (dual)
This hymn invokes the twin powers Indra and Agni to arrive together on their radiant chariot and drink the freshly pressed Soma. It repeatedly calls them from whatever sphere they delight in—home, sacred speech (brahman), or royal might—so they may grant victory, cattle/wealth, and all-round prosperity. The closing benediction widens the prayer to other sustaining deities and cosmic supports (Mitra-Varuṇa, Aditi, Sindhu, Earth and Heaven).
Mantra 1
O Indra and Agni, the most radiant chariot of yours that looks upon all the worlds—by that come, standing together on one car; then drink the pressed Soma.
Mantra 2
As vast as this whole world is—wide in extension, broad in range, deep—so vast may this Soma be for drinking, sufficient for the mind of you two, Indra and Agni.
Mantra 3
You two have indeed wrought the auspicious good by a straight and united movement—O two slayers of the Coverer, you stand firm. O Indra-and-Agni, seated together in the right-impulse, grow puissant with the bull-strength of Soma; O two mighty ones, be made strong.
Mantra 4
When the fires are kindled, come near, recognizing (the call); with well-directed ladles the strewn seat is spread out. With the keen Soma-powers poured all around, come hither, O Indra-and-Agni, for a glad harmony of mind.
Mantra 5
Whatever heroic powers you have accomplished, O Indra-and-Agni, whatever forms and whatever bull-strengths—whatever ancient and blissful friendships are yours: by those powers drink the pressed Soma.
Mantra 6
When, choosing you, I first proclaimed: ‘This Soma is to be invoked for us, not to be diverted by hostile powers’—to that true faith come here; then drink of the pressed Soma.
Mantra 7
If, O Indra-and-Agni, you take delight in your own home, or in the Brahman (the inspired utterance), or in the kingly power—O adorable ones: from there, come around to us, O two mighty ones; then drink the pressed Soma.
Mantra 8
If you are with the Yadus, with the Turvaśas, with the Druhyus, with the Anus, with the Pūrus—then from there come around, O two mighty ones; and drink the pressed Soma.
Mantra 9
If you are in the lower earth, in the middle, or in the highest—then from there come around, O two mighty ones; and drink the pressed Soma.
Mantra 10
If you are in the highest earth, in the middle, or in the lowest—then from there come around, O two mighty ones; and drink the pressed Soma.
Mantra 11
If you stand in heaven, or on earth, or in the mountains, in the plants, in the waters—then from there come around, O two mighty ones; and drink the pressed Soma.
Mantra 12
If, O Indra-and-Agni, you rejoice by your own power in the rising of the Sun, in the mid-heaven—then from there come around, O two mighty ones; and drink the pressed Soma.
Mantra 13
Thus, O Indra and Agni, you who have drunk of the pressed Soma, win wholly for us the riches—every plenitude of being. And may Mitra and Varuṇa enlarge us; may Aditi, the flowing Sindhu, Earth and Heaven uphold and increase us.
They are praised as a paired power: Indra brings victorious strength, and Agni brings the sacrificial fire that carries offerings. Together they make the ritual effective and prosperity-giving.
In Soma rites, inviting the gods to drink Soma means inviting their presence and power into the sacrifice. It signals that the offering is accepted and that blessings can flow to the worshippers.
The hymn ends by widening the blessing beyond Indra–Agni alone. These names represent cosmic order, protection, abundance, and the stable supports of life, sealing the prayer with universal well-being.
