Sukta 102

Mantra 1

इमां ते धियं प्र भरे महो महीमस्य स्तोत्रे धिषणा यत्त आनजे । तमुत्सवे च प्रसवे च सासहिमिन्द्रं देवासः शवसामदन्ननु ॥

This thought of illumination I bring forth to thee—great, for the Great—when the inspired intelligence is yoked in the act of praise. That conquering Indra, in the uprush and in the forward impulsion, the gods follow and rejoice in, by his force.

Mantra 2

अस्य श्रवो नद्यः सप्त बिभ्रति द्यावाक्षामा पृथिवी दर्शतं वपुः । अस्मे सूर्याचन्द्रमसाभिचक्षे श्रद्धे कमिन्द्र चरतो वितर्तुरम् ॥

Seven rivers bear his fame; Heaven-and-Earth and the wide world carry his visible form. For us the Sun and Moon look on; O Faith, whom do they move with Indra—those two that traverse, widening the passage?

Mantra 3

तं स्मा रथं मघवन्प्राव सातये जैत्रं यं ते अनुमदाम संगमे । आजा न इन्द्र मनसा पुरुष्टुत त्वायद्भ्यो मघवञ्छर्म यच्छ नः ॥

That chariot, O bounteous one, lead forth for our winning—the victorious car in which we rejoice beside thee in the clash. Come to us, Indra, by the will; O much-praised, grant shelter to those who are turned to thee.

Mantra 4

वयं जयेम त्वया युजा वृतमस्माकमंशमुदवा भरेभरे । अस्मभ्यमिन्द्र वरिवः सुगं कृधि प्र शत्रूणां मघवन्वृष्ण्या रुज ॥

May we conquer with thee as yoke-fellow the enclosing obstruction; lift up our rightful share in every bearing of the load. For us, Indra, make a wide and happy path; O bounteous one, shatter the adversaries by thy lordly might.

Mantra 5

नाना हि त्वा हवमाना जना इमे धनानां धर्तरवसा विपन्यवः । अस्माकं स्मा रथमा तिष्ठ सातये जैत्रं हीन्द्र निभृतं मनस्तव ॥

Many indeed are these peoples calling thee, O holder of plenitudes, with their seeking speech and thy help. Yet mount our chariot for the winning—the victorious car; for, Indra, thy will is steadfastly held.

Mantra 6

गोजिता बाहू अमितक्रतुः सिमः कर्मन्कर्मञ्छतमूतिः खजंकरः । अकल्प इन्द्रः प्रतिमानमोजसाथा जना वि ह्वयन्ते सिषासवः ॥

His arms win the luminous herds; his will is measureless. In act after act he is the many-formed helper, the breaker of hard knots. Indra is without equal, a standard by his force; therefore men call out in diverse ways, desiring to win.

Mantra 7

उत्ते शतान्मघवन्नुच्च भूयस उत्सहस्राद्रिरिचे कृष्टिषु श्रवः । अमात्रं त्वा धिषणा तित्विषे मह्यधा वृत्राणि जिघ्नसे पुरंदर ॥

Higher than hundreds, higher still than more, higher than thousands thy fame overflows among the peoples. Measureless, the inspired intelligence kindles thee to greatness; then thou smitest the Vṛtras, O breaker of cities.

Mantra 8

त्रिविष्टिधातु प्रतिमानमोजसस्तिस्रो भूमीर्नृपते त्रीणि रोचना । अतीदं विश्वं भुवनं ववक्षिथाशत्रुरिन्द्र जनुषा सनादसि ॥

O lord of men, a threefold-seated holder, a standard by thy energy; thou supportest the three earths and the three luminous realms. Thou hast surpassed all this world of becoming; foe-less, Indra, by birth and from of old thou art.

Mantra 9

त्वां देवेषु प्रथमं हवामहे त्वं बभूथ पृतनासु सासहिः । सेमं नः कारुमुपमन्युमुद्भिदमिन्द्रः कृणोतु प्रसवे रथं पुरः ॥

Thee first among the gods we call; thou hast become the overcomer in the battles. Let Indra make for us this singer a breaker-up of anger, a cleaver of obstruction, and in the forward impulsion set our chariot in front.

Mantra 10

त्वं जिगेथ न धना रुरोधिथार्भेष्वाजा मघवन्महत्सु च । त्वामुग्रमवसे सं शिशीमस्यथा न इन्द्र हवनेषु चोदय ॥

Thou hast conquered and thou dost not obstruct our plenitudes of substance; in the small battles and in the great as well, O Maghavan. Thee, the strong Power, for our guarding we whet and make ready; then, O Indra, impel us forward in our calls.

Mantra 11

विश्वाहेन्द्रो अधिवक्ता नो अस्त्वपरिह्वृताः सनुयाम वाजम् । तन्नो मित्रो वरुणो मामहन्तामदितिः सिन्धुः पृथिवी उत द्यौः ॥

May Indra be for us the over-speaker and protector at all times, so that unbeguiled we may win the plenitude of force. And may Mitra and Varuṇa enlarge us; may Aditi, the River of the flow, Earth and Heaven foster us.
