पापमोचनम्। अग्निं ब्रूमो वनस्पतीनोषधीरुत वीरुधः । इन्द्रं बृहस्पतिं सूर्यं ते नो मुञ्चन्त्वंहसः

A release from evil: We invoke Agni, the Lords of the wood, the healing herbs and the plants that creep; Indra, Bṛhaspati, and Sūrya—let these set us free from anguish and from sin.

We proclaim the Kingly Powers—Varuṇa, Mitra, and Viṣṇu, and further Bhaga; Aṃśa and Vivasvant we proclaim: may they release us from distress and sin.

ब्रूमो देवं सवितारं धातारमुत पूषणम्। त्वष्टारमग्रियं ब्रूमस्ते नो मुञ्चन्त्वंहसः

We proclaim the God Savitar, Dhātṛ, and also Pūṣan; Tvaṣṭṛ, the excellent, we proclaim: may they release us from distress and sin.

गन्धर्वाप्सरसो ब्रूमो अश्विना ब्रह्मणस्पतिम्। अर्यमा नाम यो देवस्ते नो मुञ्चन्त्वंहसः

Gandharvas and Apsarases we proclaim; the Aśvins, and Bṛhaspati: Aryaman by name, that god—may they release us from distress and sin.

अहोरात्रे इदं ब्रूमः सूर्याचन्द्रमसावुभा। विश्वानादित्यान् ब्रूमस्ते नो मुञ्चन्त्वंहसः

Day and Night—this we proclaim; the Sun and Moon, both: all the Ādityas we proclaim; may they release us from distress and sin.

वातं ब्रूमः पर्जन्यमन्तरिक्षमथो दिशः । आशाश्च सर्वा ब्रूमस्ते नो मुञ्चन्त्वंहसः

The Wind we proclaim, Parjanya, and the Mid-air; and further the Directions, and all the Quarters: these we proclaim; may they release us from distress and sin.

मुञ्चन्तु मा शपथ्याऽदहोरात्रे अथो उषाः । सोमो मा देवो मुञ्चतु यमाहुश्चन्द्रमा इति

Let Day and Night, and let the Dawns, release me from the oath-bound sin. Let Soma, the God, release me—he whom men call the Moon.

पार्थिवा दिव्यः पशव आरण्या उत ये मृगाः । शकुन्तान् पक्षिणो ब्रूमस्ते नो मुञ्चन्त्वंहसः

The creatures of earth, the creatures of heaven, the forest beasts, and whatsoever wild game there be; the omen-birds, the winged—we address them: let them release us from distress.

भवाशर्वाविदं ब्रूमो रुद्रं पशुपतिश्च यः । इषूर्या एषां संविद्म ता नः सन्तु सदा शिवाः

To Bhava and to Śarva this we speak—to Rudra, and to Paśupati: we know full well their arrowy powers; let those be ever gracious unto us.

दिवं ब्रूमो नक्षत्राणि भूमिं यक्षाणि पर्वतान्। समुद्रा नद्योऽ वेशन्तास्ते नो मुञ्चन्त्वंहसः

Heaven we address, and the Stars; Earth, the Yaksas, and the Mountains; the Seas, the Rivers that enter and abide: let these release us from distress.

सप्तर्षीन् वा इदं ब्रूमोऽपो देवीः प्रजापतिम्। पितॄन् यमश्रेष्ठान् ब्रूमस्ते नो मुञ्चन्त्वंहसः

The Seven Seers, verily, we thus address; the Waters, the Goddesses, and Prajāpati; the Fathers whose chief is Yama we address: let these release us from distress.

ये देवा दिविषदो अन्तरिक्षसदश्च ये। पृथिव्यां शक्रा ये श्रितास्ते नो मुञ्चन्त्वंहसः

What Gods there be who dwell in heaven, and whatso dwell in mid-air; what mighty ones on earth are set and stationed—let these for us unloose from anguish and from sin.

आदित्या रुद्रा वसवो दिवि देवा अथर्वाणः। अङ्गिरसो मनीषिणस्ते नो मुञ्चन्त्वंहसः

Five sovereignties of plants we name, most excellent, Soma-best. Darbha, Bhaṅga, Barley together—let these for us unloose from anguish and from sin.

अरायान् ब्रूमो रक्षांसि सर्पान् पुण्यजनान् पितृन्। मृत्यूनेकशतं ब्रूमस्ते नो मुञ्चन्त्वंहसः

We name the hostile; we name the demons; the serpents; the blessed folk; the Fathers. A hundred deaths we name: let these for us unloose from anguish and from sin.

ऋतून् ब्रूम ऋतुपतीनार्तवानुत हायनान्। समाः संवत्सरान् मासांस्ते नो मुञ्चन्त्वंहसः

We utter forth the Seasons, and the Lords of Seasons; the seasonal rounds, and eke the years. The years, the full-year cycles, and the months—let these release us from distress and sin.

Mantra 18

एत देवा दक्षिणतः पश्चात् प्राञ्च उदेत । पुरस्तादुत्तराच्छक्रा विश्वे देवाः समेत्य ते नो मुञ्चन्त्वंहसः

Hither, O Gods, from south and west; come forth from east; from before and from the north—ye mighty Ones! Let all the Gods, assembled, release us from distress and sin.

That medicine which Mātali knoweth—immortal, purchased with a chariot—this Indra caused to enter into the Waters: that medicine, O Waters, bestow ye here.

Aṃhas is a broad Atharvanic term for distress: it can include sin/guilt, ritual impurity, misfortune, illness, fear, and the sense of being ‘bound’ by harmful conditions. The hymn repeatedly asks to be “unloosed” from it.

In Atharvanic practice, naming is a form of control. By speaking these categories within a protected refrain (“let them release us”), the threats are ritually contained, neutralized, and compelled to withdraw rather than remain unnamed and uncontrolled.
