Sukta 9.86
पवस्व सोम दिव्येषु धामसु सृजान इन्दो कलशे पवित्र आ । सीदन्निन्द्रस्य जठरे कनिक्रदन्नृभिर्यतः सूर्यमारोहयो दिवि ॥
pávasva soma divyéṣu dhā́masu sṛjāná indo kalaśé pavítra ā́ | sī́dann índrasya jaṭháre kánikradan nṛ́bhir yatáḥ sū́ryam ā́rohayo diví ||
Soma is urged to purify in the divine abodes; released, Indu enters the bowl and strainer. Sitting in Indra’s belly, crying aloud, supported by human powers, he has raised the Sun in heaven.
Soma’s purification is to ascend and operate in ‘divine abodes’—higher states of consciousness. Released from lower mixture (sṛjāna), the luminous essence enters the ‘strainer’ and ‘bowl’: the discriminating faculty and the receptive heart-mind that hold the purified delight. ‘Sitting in Indra’s belly’ means Soma becomes the very substance of illumined power—Indra’s force of victory is fed by purified Ananda. ‘Crying aloud’ is the triumphant vibration of realization. Supported by ‘human powers’ indicates embodied discipline cooperating with grace. The result: ‘raising the Sun in heaven’—establishing the supramental/light principle (Sūrya) in the higher mind, so illumination becomes stable and sovereign.
When delight is purified and placed in the right inner instruments, it nourishes illumination and lifts the Sun of truth into the heights of consciousness; disciplined human effort can cooperate with a higher joy to establish lasting clarity.
Soma-ritual, Purification instrument, Raising the Sun (illumination), Indra assimilation
Pavamāna Soma tradition; often culminates in imagery of raising light (Sūrya) through Soma-Indra synergy.
This verse is a climactic yogic statement: purified Ananda enters the instruments, empowers illumination, and establishes the Sun of truth in the higher consciousness.
Purifies through divine stations, enters vessels, strengthens Indra, and manifests Sūrya (truth-light) in heaven.
Ananda as transformative fuel: it energizes illumined will and lifts consciousness to stable truth-vision.
Soma purification and offering to Indra; Pavamāna recitation during Soma-yajña

4 × 12 syllables (probable)
Commanding imperatives (‘pavasva’) with a climactic lift toward ‘sūryam ārohayo divi’.
Energizes and elevates; felt as an upward surge culminating in a bright inner ‘sunrise’.
Explicit reference to pavitra and kalaśa: Soma filtration into the vessel; Indra’s assimilation; linked to the raising of light (Sūrya) as ritual and inner result
At moments of Soma release into vessels and offering sequences; especially Indra-related portions.
Chant as Soma enters the strainer/bowl; symbolic ‘raising of the Sun’ aligns with successful offering and auspicious outcome.
A mantra for clarity and uplift before study/decision-making: purify emotions, seat joy in the heart, then invoke stable truth-light in the mind.
dhāman ‘abode’ from √dhā ‘to place’—stable placements of consciousness. pavitra ‘strainer’ from √pū ‘purify’ + instrument suffix; both ritual tool and inner discriminative filter. jaṭhara ‘belly’ as assimilative chamber—psychologically the seat where force is digested into power. ā-rohayaḥ causative of √ruh ‘rise’—Soma as raiser of Sūrya (light) in the heaven of mind.
divine abodes (dhāman) as higher planes, purification through discernment (pavitra), assimilation (jaṭhara) and illumination (sūrya)
Purification in ‘divine abodes’ implies alignment with cosmic order rather than lower turbulence.
Raising Sūrya is establishing Satya in the higher mind—truth that governs perception.
Manifestation of the Sun: the emergence of light from purified essence; a classic Vedic ‘bringing out the hidden light’ motif.
Aurobindonian Vedic symbolism: Soma (Ananda) feeding Indra (illumined mind) to manifest Sūrya (truth-consciousness).
Sunrise implied
Strainer = discrimination; bowl = receptive heart-mind; Sun = truth-consciousness; heaven = higher mental plane; cry = victorious vibration of realization.
Visualize Soma as a bright stream purified through an inner filter, collecting in the heart; feel it empower illumined will and lift a clear ‘Sun’ above the brow.
Ājñā/Sahasrāra (Sun raised in heaven) with Anāhata (vessel of Soma)
3-part practice: (1) exhale-release ‘sṛjānaḥ’; (2) inhale-collect into heart ‘kalaśe’; (3) gentle breath retention 1–2 seconds on ‘sūryam’ to sense upward light (no strain).
Uplifted, victorious clarity; stable luminous mind.
Chant 12–27 times; then sit with attention above brow, imagining a steady sun-disc of clear light fed by sweetness in the heart; end by offering the day’s actions to that light.
Imperative ‘pavasva’ carries clear accent; maintain Vedic pitch contours (udatta peaks, svarita falls) as per Saṃhitā; exact svara requires accented recension text.
Let pāda 1 be steady and purificatory; increase energy on ‘sīdann… kanikradan’; culminate with a lifted, bright tone on ‘sūryam ārohayo divi’.
divyeṣu: ‘ye’ as palatal glide, not ‘ji’, dhāmasu: long ā, pavitra: v as soft labiodental; tr conjunct clean, jaṭhare: retroflex ṭ, ārohayo: long ā; ‘h’ clearly aspirated
Clear, ringing, upward-directed; finish with a bright sustained vowel on ‘divi’.
