Sukta 8.6
इमा अभि प्र णोनुमो विपामग्रेषु धीतयः । अग्नेः शोचिर्न दिद्युतः ॥
imā́ abhi prá nón̄umo vipā́m ágreṣu dhītáyaḥ | agnéḥ śocír ná didyútaḥ ||
These thoughts/inspirations we urge forward in the forefront of the seers; they shine like Agni’s flame, like lightning.
The dhītayaḥ (inspired understandings) are not passive: they are pressed forward (pra ṇonumaḥ) to lead the inner march of the vipāḥ (seers, illumined thinkers). When the front of consciousness is occupied by these inspirations, they blaze like Agni’s flame—psychic fire—and flash like lightning: sudden, decisive illuminations that guide action and sacrifice.
Progress depends on placing the highest discernment and inspiration at the front of life; when guided by the inner flame, insight becomes radiant and effective.
Invocation, Illumination, Poetic inspiration (vipāṃ dhītayaḥ)
Kaṇvas link Indra’s victory with Agni’s leading light: the battle is won when inspirations are advanced under the guidance of the inner fire.
The seer points to the method: advance dhī (inspiration) to the front; Agni then becomes visible as illuminating force in the mind-life.
Divine fire that leads the sacrifice; mediator between human and divine; awakener of light and purifier of the paths.
Psychic flame and will-to-truth that turns inspiration into living illumination and right action.
Agni invocation within broader Indra hymn-cycle; supports kindling of the sacrificial fire and the ‘front-leading’ function (purohita).

Recitation within Soma-related praise cycles and Agni/Indra invocations; applicable as a stotra-like energizing verse to kindle dhī (inspiration) before offering/pressing (general Śrauta Soma context).
At kindling/strengthening of Agni or when emphasizing inspired speech and guidance of the rite.
Recitation while tending fire; mentally ‘placing’ inspirations in front as offering into Agni.
Before study, creative work, or meditation: chant to bring intuitive guidance to the forefront and ignite inner clarity.
: 1pl. middle, intensive/desiderative-like formation from √/√ ‘to push, impel’ → ‘we strongly impel/rouse’. : nom. pl. f. from dhī- (√ ‘to think/see/hold in mind’)—in RV often ‘inspired vision’ rather than discursive thought. : neut. ‘flame, radiance’, tied to √/śuc ‘to shine, be bright/pure’. : gen./abl. sg. or nom. pl. (here used in simile with śociḥ) from √ ‘shine, flash’; suggests sudden revelatory illumination.
Dhī (inspired intelligence), Inner illumination, Rita as luminous order implicitly supported by Agni’s clarifying force
Agni’s light places the being on the path of ṛta; inspirations become ‘right-leading’.
Lightning-like truth reveals itself when the inner fire is awake and pure.
Emergence of light from fire—illumination born of tapas.
Yoga of works and knowledge (Aurobindo): Agni as psychic will leading the transformation.
dawn/early light (suggestive of first illuminations)
Fire = psychic will and purification; lightning = sudden intuition that cuts through obscurity.
Bring attention to the heart-flame (psychic) and the brow-light (intuition); invite inspirations to lead your decisions.
anāhata (psychic flame) with ājñā (illumined seeing)
Inhale: feel a small flame in the heart; exhale: let it rise as a flash to the brow; pause in still brightness.
Alert, luminous, quietly enthusiastic.
After chanting, write one clear guidance that arises (a ‘dhī’). Act on it in a small way to keep inspirations ‘in front’ rather than behind habit.
Tri-svara; keep udātta lift on dhītayaḥ and agneḥ śociḥ; let didyutaḥ have a bright rising-falling contour (svarita where marked).
Slight emphasis on agreṣu (‘in front’) to embody the instruction; keep the simile na didyutaḥ crisp.
imāḥ: long ā; visarga ḥ clear, nonumaḥ: retroflex ṇ? (here dental n); keep ‘no-nu’ distinct and light, vipām: long ā; final m nasal, agneḥ: hard g; visarga before ś, śociḥ: palatal ś; short iḥ at end
