Devata

Indra (probable) / Vasu epithet; requires Anukramaṇī confirmation for RV 10.105

Chandas

Jagatī or Triṣṭubh (uncertain from excerpt; requires meter scan of full sukta)

Inside Sukta 105

How it unfolds

  1. Where it opens

A direct, urgent question to “Vasu” (Indra) about when the hymn will truly delight him, paired with imagery of breath and the long-pressed Soma’s strengthening.

  2. Development

Praise expands into descriptions of Indra’s loftiness and fashioned might, using archetypal comparisons (Ṛbhu-like skill, Mātariśvan-like effective agency) to magnify his capability.

  3. Climax

The hymn reaches its persuasive peak by invoking concrete heroic memory—Indra’s protection and leading forth of Kutsa figures in Dasyu-slaying and conflict.

  4. Where it settles

It closes by affirming Indra’s reliability toward allies and the efficacy of praise, leaving the sacrificer under the assurance of Indra’s guardianship and victory-granting power.

The deity: Indra

  • In the VedaIndra is the foremost heroic deity of the Rig Veda—Soma-loving, praised by stotras, breaker of obstacles, and champion who protects allies and defeats Dasyus. He is invoked as mighty in śavas (force), responsive to well-fashioned praise, and renowned for rescuing and leading his protégés to victory.
  • Cosmic functionHe secures ṛta by overcoming hostile powers, releases and sustains life-supporting forces, and establishes safe passage and prosperity for the sacrificer’s community.
  • Inner significanceIndra represents the awakened will and victorious courage that breaks inner resistance, clears constriction of breath/energy, and turns inspired speech (stotra) into effective power.

Frequently Asked Questions

The hymn is primarily addressed to Indra, though it uses the epithet “Vasu.” Full certainty of the heading details comes from the Anukramaṇī tradition.

It seeks Indra’s delight in the hymn and Soma offering, and asks for his strengthening, protection of allies, and victory over hostile or obstructing forces.

These are remembered examples of Indra’s past help. By recalling them, the hymn argues that Indra will likewise protect and lead the present worshipper to success.
