Sukta 2

Rishi: Atharvanic tradition (often transmitted under Atharvan/Angiras lineages for Kāma material)

Devata: Kāma (personified Desire/Compulsion) as rival-slayer

Chandas: Predominantly Anuṣṭubh-like cadence (Atharvanic mixed anuṣṭubh usage)

Inside Sukta 2

How it unfolds

  1. How it opens

The hymn opens by identifying Kāma as the bull-like rival-slayer and immediately ‘sets’ him in motion with ghṛta/ājya oblation (9.2.1).

  2. What it asks

Kāma is commanded to press rivals downward, cast them into darkness, and strip them of vitality and faculties so they cannot oppose the patron (e.g., 9.2.10).

  3. Where its power lies

Kāma is proclaimed greater than ordinary measures of steadiness and even greater than the ocean—an absolute, ever-mighty force whose compulsion cannot be resisted (9.2.23).

  4. How it closes

The sukta seals its coercion by ending in homage/acknowledgment (namaḥ) to Kāma’s supreme might, treating reverence as the final binding of the power invoked.

Kind of hymn

Abhicarika (Rival-subduing) / Paustika (Securing advantage)

What it is for

To empower Kāma as an operative force that humiliates, disables, and (in harsher verses) destroys rivals, while consolidating the patron’s ascendancy and the irresistibility of their intention.

Who it is for

Householders, patrons, and Atharvanic ritual specialists seeking competitive advantage—legal, social, political, or interpersonal—where rivals are to be subdued rather than reconciled.

Also used as

  • Paustika
  • Sapatnahana (rival-crushing)
  • Stambhana/nirodha (paralysis/constraint)

The deity

Kāma is personified Desire/Compulsion—an inner drive elevated to a cosmic, commanding power that can impel outcomes, coerce rivals, and make intention irresistible. In this sukta Kāma is praised as an ṛṣabha (bull) and as sapatna-han (rival-slayer), functioning like a directed force unleashed by mantra and offering.

Powers of the deity

  • Rival-slaying and rival-abasement (sapatna-hanana; nīcaiḥ pādanam)
  • Coercive compulsion: making the patron’s will irresistible
  • Withering opponents’ vitality (rasa) and faculties (indriya)
  • Casting into darkness/confusion (tamas) and social downfall
  • Cosmic superiority: depicted as greater than ordinary measures of steadiness and vastness

Why the deity is called

Invoked to be “set to work” through ghee/ājya oblations so that Kāma actively presses competitors down, breaks their capacity to act, and secures dominance, advantage, and enduring success for the patron.

The seer

  • Atharvanic (Kāma-hymn complex; Atharvan/Āṅgiras lineage attribution)Atharvan. Abhicārika coercion and rival-subduing charms, especially rites that harness inner impulse (kāma/manyu) through oblation to bend opponents and secure advantage.

Other hymns of this seer

  • AV 9.1 (Kāma hymn cycle, allied material)
  • AV 3.28 (Sapatnahana/rival-crushing type material, thematic parallel)
  • AV 6.75 (Abhicārika/constraint motifs, thematic parallel)

Preparing for the rite

  • Establish a clean ritual space and kindled fire (or a domestic offering setting) appropriate for Atharvanic oblation.
  • Prepare ghṛta/ājya as the principal offering; keep havis ready for repeated small offerings synchronized with key imperatives.
  • State the patron’s intention (saṅkalpa): naming rivals/competitors and the desired form of their abasement (downfall, loss of agency, retreat).

The rite

  • Recite the hymn in a steady anuṣṭubh-like cadence, emphasizing imperative verbs (jahi, pādaya) at their occurrences.
  • Offer ghṛta/ājya with the opening activation verse (e.g., 9.2.1) to ‘yoke’ Kāma to the rite.
  • During harsher suppression verses (e.g., 9.2.10), perform additional oblations and a symbolic ‘pressing down’ gesture (hand/palm downward motion) to enact nīcaiḥ-pādanam.
  • Conclude with reverential homage to Kāma’s supremacy (e.g., 9.2.23), sealing the rite by acknowledging Kāma’s greater-than-all status.

What it needs

  • Ghṛta (ghee)
  • Ājya (clarified butter)
  • Havis (simple oblation material; often ghee-based)
  • Fire/offering vessel (as applicable to the practitioner’s setting)

When

Traditionally performed when entering or intensifying competition (before assemblies, disputes, contests), or at liminal times (dawn/dusk) when Atharvanic rites are often framed as most effective.

The main substance

Ghṛta/Ājya (ghee, clarified butter)

How it is prepared

Use clean, warmed ghṛta/ājya suitable for offering; portion into small ladles/spoons for repeated oblations aligned with key rival-subduing commands.

Frequently Asked Questions

Here Kāma is not primarily romantic love; it is Desire/Compulsion as a commanding force. The hymn treats Kāma as a power that can be directed to overpower rivals and make one’s intention prevail.

Ghṛta/ājya (ghee/clarified butter) offered as havis is central, especially in the opening where Kāma is ‘set to work’ through oblation and praise.

Its primary function is abhicārika (rival-subduing/coercive). It can also be read as paustika in the sense of securing advantage and dominance for the patron, but its tone is explicitly competitive and suppressive.
