Outer meaning

Come; the tawny steeds/powers are loosed and set upon the sacred grass-seat, where we may unite together in a shared offering.

Inner meaning

The ‘tawny ones’ (harayaḥ aruṣīḥ)—Indra’s dynamic forces—are released into the inner field and placed on the barhis, the prepared seat of consciousness. There, the seeker-community gathers into a single harmony (saṃnavāmahe): alignment of will, mind, and life for the inner sacrifice so the illumined Power can act.

Universal truth

Spiritual progress requires both release of energy and a prepared, consecrated inner space; when energies are gathered and harmonized, higher intelligence descends and works effectively.

Themes

Indra-invocation, Soma-ritual, preparation of the inner seat, harmonization of forces

Rishi
Pragātha tradition (Mandala 8; Kāṇva-associated compilation)
Lineage
Kāṇva (probable collection-attribution)
Other hymns
RV 8.69.4-8 (same hymn segment), RV 8.2 (Kāṇva Indra invocations, similar energy imagery)

Family tradition

Mandala 8 often preserves Kāṇva praise-songs with strong communal/choral elements and practical yogic-ritual psychology.

Significance

The seer emphasizes preparation and harmonization: divine force is not only called, it is ‘seated’ in a purified ground where the being can unite and offer.

Devata
Indra (implicit through harayaḥ)
Epithets
Harivān (possessor of tawny steeds), Vṛtrahan (slayer of obstruction; implied by the need to release forces)
Related deities
Agni (prepares the seat by purification), Soma (gives sweetness and cohesion to the offering), Maruts (energies that accompany Indra)

Cosmic role

Mobilizes the dynamic powers that carry illumination into the human field; makes the inner journey possible.

Inner power

Command of energies—ability to yoke life-force to higher intelligence and seat it in disciplined receptivity.

Where it is used

Indra invitation with seating of powers in Soma ritual setting (barhis imagery)
