  • Sandhi resolution (pada-wise): अस्मे | इन्द्रावरुणा | विश्ववारम् | रयिम् | धत्तम् | वसुमन्तम् | पुरुक्षुम् || प्र | यः | आदित्यः | अनृताः | मिनाति | अमितः | शूरः | दयते | वसूनि । Notable: (1) प्र य → प्र + यः (visarga lost before y in saṃhitā). (2) अनृताः मिनाति appears as अनृतामिनाति in saṃhitā by vowel coalescence across word-boundary. (3) Accent marks in the prompt are saṃhitā accents

Outer meaning

Place in us, O Indra and Varuṇa, a wealth that contains all desirable things, rich and abundant. For the Aditya, the immeasurable hero, diminishes falsehoods and distributes riches.

Inner meaning

The prayer asks not merely for external prosperity but for an inner ‘rayi’ that is viśvavāra—holding all true desirable powers: clarity, strength, harmony, joy. ‘Vasumantam’ indicates substance/essence; ‘purukṣu’ suggests many capacities/energies. The second half reveals the mechanism: the Āditya principle (Varuṇa’s solar truth-power, with Indra’s heroic force as its executor) actively ‘mināti anṛtā’—diminishes untruth in thought, speech, and impulse. As falsehood recedes, true ‘vasūni’ (real riches of being) can be apportioned and organized in the nature.

Universal truth

Lasting abundance is the fruit of truth. When untruth is reduced—self-deception, wrong desire, distorted speech—life becomes capable of receiving and holding real powers and harmonies.

Themes

bestowal of plenitude, destruction of falsehood, truth-based prosperity

Rishi
Vasiṣṭha
Other hymns
RV 7.84.2, RV 7.85.1, RV 7.86.1-6

Family tradition

The Vasiṣṭha voice frequently joins confession/purification with the positive installation of divine wealth (rayi) through ṛta.

Significance

Vasiṣṭha’s psychology is ethical-spiritual: purification from anṛta is not moralism but the necessary clearing for the descent of true powers and harmonies.

Indra–Varuṇa (Āditya principle foregrounded)
Epithets
viśvavāra (all-boon), amita (immeasurable), śūra (hero), āditya

Cosmic role

As guardians of order and victory, they remove falsehood and establish true riches—both as cosmic governance and as inner transformation.

Inner power

Truth-force that detects and dissolves inner falsity (Varuṇa/Āditya) allied with heroic illumination and effective will (Indra).

Where it is used

Invocation for prosperity and purity within Soma/śrauta praise cycles; also adaptable to protective rites seeking removal of fault.
