रामाभिषेकपूर्वसज्जा · Preparations for Rama’s Coronation
Spoken by Citizens of AyodhyaSetting: Ayodhyā
सर्वेप्यनुगृहीता स्मो यन्नो रामो महीपतिः ।
चिराय भविता गोप्ता दृष्टलोकपरावरः ॥२२॥
sarve 'py anugṛhītā smo yan no rāmo mahīpatiḥ |
cirāya bhavitā goptā dṛṣṭalokaparāvaraḥ ||22||
All of us are fortunate indeed that Rama who knows the world's high and low shall be our king, protector for a long time.
The best kingship is protective and discerning: understanding both worldly conditions and higher values, the ruler secures long-term welfare of subjects.
Encourages bhāva of trust (viśvāsa) in dharmic protection and cultivation of viveka in one+c own duties.
Para-apara-jñāna suggests discrimination between transient and enduring values; the ideal ruler aligns worldly administration with higher good (niṣṭhā-kāma karma orientation).
Para/apara terminology recalls Muṇḍaka Upaniṣad (aparā vidyā vs parā vidyā), here transposed into ethical-political wisdom.
Muṇḍaka Upaniṣad 1.1 (parā/aparā vidyā terminology, conceptual echo); Mahābhārata Śānti Parva (rājadharma: king as protector); Rāmacaritamānasa, Ayodhyākāṇḍa (subjects+c trust in Rāma+c guardianship)
Dharmaśāstra ideal of king as goptā and daṇḍa-dhāraṇa
1.1-1.2 (Rāma as dharmajña and protector); 2.5-2.6 (public rejoicing at abhiṣeka news)
Anuṣṭubh
Joyful
Udātta lift on "sarve+cy anugṛhītā"; steady cadence for assurance
Protective kingship: dharma expects a ruler to understand all social strata and safeguard everyone over time, not merely the elite.
Citizens express relief and joy that Rāma will soon be their ruler and long-term protector.
Rāma’s worldly discernment and compassion—fitness to protect both the ‘high’ and the ‘low’.
