जाबाल्युपदेशः · Jabali’s Pragmatic Counsel to Rama
यथा ग्रामान्तरं गच्छन्नरः कश्चित्क्वचिद्वसेत् ।
उत्सृज्य च तमावासं प्रतिष्ठेतापरेऽहनि ॥५॥
एवमेव मनुष्याणां पिता माता गृहं वसु ।
अवासमात्रं काकुत्स्थ सज्जन्ते नात्र सज्जनाः ॥६॥
yathā grāmāntaraṁ gacchan naraḥ kaścit kvacid vaset |
utsṛjya ca tam āvāsaṁ pratiṣṭhetāpare 'hani ||5||
evam eva manuṣyāṇāṁ pitā mātā gṛhaṁ vasu |
āvāsamātraṁ kākutstha sajjante nātra sajjanāḥ ||6||
ดุจคนเดินทางจากหมู่บ้านหนึ่งไปอีกหมู่บ้านหนึ่ง อาจพักอาศัย ณ ที่ใดที่หนึ่ง แล้ววันรุ่งขึ้นละที่พักนั้นและออกเดินต่อไป—ฉันใดก็ฉันนั้น สำหรับมนุษย์ บิดา มารดา เรือน และทรัพย์ เป็นเพียงที่พักชั่วคราวเท่านั้น โอ้กากุตสถะ ผู้รู้ย่อมไม่ยึดติดในสิ่งเหล่านี้
A man who goes from one village to another takes rest somewhere on the way and the next day leaves the place and proceeds on his journey. Similarly, father, mother, home and wealth are resting-places to a man. The wise do not get attached to them, O descendant the Kakutsthas!
Dharma is supported by impermanence-awareness: treating possessions and relations as transient prevents greed and attachment from overriding righteous action.
Bharata uses a travel metaphor to argue for detachment, framing worldly bonds as temporary stops rather than ultimate realities.
